Chocolate Banana Muffins

My parents have some pretty incredible neighbors. Growing up, my neighbors were really close. We had what was called “chairs” every Sunday, where all the neighbors would bring their lawn chairs and gather in my parent’s driveway to talk and mingle. It has been years since I lived at my parents house, and sure enough, every sunday they are still gathering for “chairs”.  I seriously love that neighborhood.

One of my mom’s closest friends and neighbor is Faith. Faith brought my mom over some of these muffins a week or so ago. Its one her family’s recipes and I got the special permission to share with you :)

Let me tell you. These could be my most favorite muffins ever. If not my favorite then definitely in the top 3. They are so moist and have the most incredible flavor! This would be a great recipe to use if you have some ripe bananas. The sugar on top adds a fun sweet texture to each bite. Both my mom and I could not rave about these muffins enough! You are going to LOVE them!

Chocolate Banana Muffins from chef-in-training.com …These muffins are so moist and have the most delicious flavor! Definitely one of the best muffins I have ever eaten!

These look delicious! I'm actually about to make some! Question tho. I have one who is not a huge chocolate fan. Can I just eliminate the chocolate from the recipe and would they require anything else? Less sugar? More flour? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for this recipe. I was so tired of making banana bread to use my over ripe bananas. This was just perfect!
My husband has Celiac Disease so I made this Gluten Free. The only change I needed to make was to use all-purpose
Gluten Free flour. He loves these cupcakes - they are DELICIOUS. This recipe made a dozen cupcakes.
I will definitely try more of your recipes and convert them to Gluten Free.

great recipe!!! I only had one cup of banana and supplemented with 1/2 cup greek yogurt. I also added 1/2 tsp salt and 1 tsp vanilla and cut the sugar by 1/4 cup. I bake egg-free, using flax seed, and the batter tasted amazing!! I don't eat baked goods, but one of my girls says the muffins are delicious; the other hasn't eaten one, yet. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Paula B.

can't wait to try again, with the right amount of banana!!

  19. Leslie Fisher

These muffins are delicious! Have you made these into bread? I would love to try making this in a loaf pan. Just wondering if it would work.

  20. Ashley

    5

Hi! These muffins look delicious. They need 1/4 cup cocoa. I have 8 oz Nestle Toll House Cocoa and I also have 8 oz Hershey's Cocoa Natural Unsweetened. Which cocoa is the best to use? Thank you in advance and Happy Holidays!

  21. Nadia

These muffins were absolutely delicious! Thank you. I read your story about your husband's recovery and it was so touching. What a great testimony about how the Lord Jesus answers our prayers and humbles us in our times of trials. Although I am a KJV Bible believing Christian, and not a Mormon, your words were inspiring and encouraging! God Bless you and your family.

  22. Alanna

I only have regular sized chocolate chips, would that work, or should I get mini?

  23. Carol

i started to make these this morning and realized I didn't have enough chocolate chips so instead I added 1cup of finely chopped walnuts and topped with what mini chocolate chips I had left with half a tsp of sugar and they are looking great. Awesome Recipe! Thanks

  24. Jea

  25. Kim

My girls and I made these recently and they were delicious! (And I don't even like bananas!)

  26. Kristin McNeil

Just made these little gems tonight! I halved the sugar, and I used half mini semi sweet chips and half milk chocolate chips that I chopped (cuz I didn't have enough minis). Ah-freakin-mazing! Moist and chocolatey... So good!

  27. EDawgATL

    5

I like to make muffins each week for my 3 and 6 yos to eat for easy breakfasts and snacks. These turned out AWESOME! For the record, I used four small, very ripe bananas. I used white whole wheat flour, coconut oil and 2/3 cup of agave syrup in place of white sugar. I also cut the chocolate chips to probably 1/3 cup - I hate measuring so I just judge based on "the look." I think next time I will use 1/2 applesauce in place of some of the oil and maybe use flaxseed instead of egg, adding nuts or craisins would be tasty too. I love making tasty things even more wholesome and healthy. Thanks for this recipe - it's a keeper!

    1. EDawgATL

oops - I forgot that I also added 1 tsp of vanilla.

  28. Allison

Made these today and the are delicious

    1. N

Made these today - they are yummy with 1/2 the sugar and a pinch or two of salt...

  29. Paulina

    5

Definitely the best muffins I have prepared so far!

  30. Tasha Hess

I just made these and they are not out of the oven yet. But upon rereading after mixing them I was wondering if the Baking soda and Baking powder amounts are not supposed to be reversed? I don't recall ever making a muffin where there was more soda then powder. Thank you

  31. Jaime-Lee

So glad I tried out this new recipe! My boyfriend loves banana muffins, but is super picky about when they taste too "bread-like" or plain. These were a huge hit all around, and so nice and fluffy!

I let the batter sit for about an hour before cooking them, and I think it gave it just the perfect amount of rise.

    Thank you for sharing!

  32. Alyson

Hi should I use a coffee mug for cup measurements or do u have the recipe in grams. I do not know what a cup measurement is. In England it's always grams xxx

  33. Kim

These muffins are awesome! My boys finish a wholw batch in one night. I substituted low fat sour cream for the oil and reduced the fat and calories a bit. My boys didn't even notice.

  34. Patrice

I used avocado oil and God a dozen regular sized muffins and 8 minis. My. 5 year old son helped make them (messy fun) and loved the "cupcakes" for dessert.
    Thanks for the recipe.

  35. Liz Thomsen

These are delicious! My batch made 11 muffins. Will definitely make these again!

  36. Kristi

    5

I made these this morning for breakfast and my 2 year old, my husband, and I each ate 3..oops! Very tasty! Thanks so much for sharing the recipe! Will definitely make again!!

Just as a side note, I got 14 muffins from the mix and I used 3 medium bananas, 1/2 the sugar, white whole wheat flour, all coconut oil, and less chocolate chips..had to do some changes to justify eating them for breakfast :)

  37. Abby C

    5

I made these tonight and they turned out fabulous! I used 1/2 the sugar and added some vanilla. Definitely will make these muffins again. Thanks for the recipe!!!

  40. christa

    5

It's true - these are amazing!
Although, I haven't actually tried the full real recipe. I was out of chocolate chips so substituted peanut butter chips... which was a marvelous substitution, I highly recommend trying that variation!

  41. Joann Rouston

    4

As published, this batter was very dense. I added 1/3 cup coconut milk and 2/3 cup white sugar. Skipped the sugar on the top. Very tasty and beautiful. This chef needs to go back in training!

  42. Dorothy Daus

    Super yummy,easy too

  43. Yan

Is it alright to use bananas that aren't that ripe yet?

  44. Kat

    Could I make these mini?

    1. Chef in Training

This is my go to recipe. Everyone who has tasted them has just oooed and awwed over them. I moved to Oregon this past year and got a message from my friend in Cali to please make and mail her some....lol! We are big chocolate people so we use the regular size chocolate chips, perfection!

  51. Fran

    5

OMGosh! Just made these muffins and they really are great! Awesome flavor and a great way to use over ripe bananas. My hubby isn't a huge fan of banana bread but he does love muffins...these were a hit :)

    5

i am pretty excited to prepare this! may i just ask? will it be powdered sugar for sprinkling on top or just the refined one? and shall i sprinkle it over a partially cooked muffins or over the batter when i already lined them on the tray? thank u...just im really bit scared to fail on these.

    1. Chef in Training

granulated sugar :) and sprinkle it over the batter

  53. jill

I just made these in my square muffin tin. They look beautiful! They taste pretty good too- but I do wish they had some salt in the batter.

    1. jill

ooh so these are FANTASTIC with some Kosher salt sprinkled on top!!!

  54. Squeaky

    4

This is a nice recipe, but I find they are quite sweet enough with 1/2 the sugar and 1/2 the chocolate chips, especially if you really puree the banana with an immersion blender. I find that makes the banana even sweeter when used in baking. But, I have made these a few times now (with the sugar halved) and everyone likes them!

  55. Trey

Making these now. The batter seemed a little...lacking? Seems like it needed more oil or possible some rich butter in it. Could be wrong though. Never made such a muffin but will deff post when its done!

  56. Florainne

Thanks for sharing the recipe! Easy to make and delish!

  57. Rachel

    5

I only had 1 cup banana so I added 1/2 plain Greek yogurt. I added a heaping 1/4 cup cocoa. Other than that I followed the recipe. It was very easy to make and delicious. Thank you!

  58. Rhiannon

Batter was waaaaaay to dense. I added half a stick of unsalted butter just to get it combined. Hopefully they turn out....

  59. Leslie D. Moran

    5

looks yummy think i will make these this morning :)

  60. Katie

I made a half batch substituting plain Greek yogurt for a third of the banana, and used dark chocolate chunks. They turned out perfectly moist and fluffy, so delicious! Thank you for this recipe!

  61. Christie

    5

Thank you so much for this recipe. I found it ages ago on Pinterest and I make it for my boyfriend and all our co-workers (at two jobs) at least every two weeks. People buy me bananas just so I'll make these. They're VERY popular!!

  62. Nancy

This is a wonderful recipe - a very light - textured muffin with good flavour.

  63. Carol

I've made these once before and they came out fantastic!

My son has preschool graduation coming up and parents are bringing things, I would love to make these again but "Toddler" size ?

Any thoughts on baking time for Mini sized???

    Thank you!

  67. Rana

    5

We reduced the amount of sugar by half, added about a tablespoon extra oil to make up for the lower sugar content and these were still excellent and just the right amount of sweetness for my family's taste. Thanks for sharing!

  68. Laura

    4

These muffins taste great; however, I would not call them muffins. In my opinion, they are cupcakes because they are extremely sweet and full of chocolate. I would not server these as breakfast muffins, instead serve them as a dessert. I doubled the recipe and ended up with 36 medium size muffins.

  69. Roberta Meredith

    5

I am not a banana fan! In fact, I would say I loath them. Why do I tell you this? So you will comprehend how how amazing it is for me to say that these muffins are the best! When I think of making muffins for an occasion these are often the ones I choose!

  70. Michele

I just made the muffins and they were fantastic...I did add walnuts & sub'd with coconut oil...KEEPER FOR SURE..thank you for this simple recipe ;)

  71. Bobbi Hodge

This is a great recipe! I made mini muffins and got 42 muffins from the batch. I only had regular size chocolate chips, so that is what I used. Yummy...plus I added teaspoon of vanilla (because that's what I do!). I baked them for 15 minutes. This is a keeper recipe for sure! Thank you!

  72. TJ

Decided to make mini-sized muffins, and they took about 16-18 minutes. I also added some vanilla extract and nutmeg to the batter, and it ended up tasting delicious !

  73. Sue

These just came out of my oven and they look and smell amazing!! I made them a little bit smaller and ended up getting 2 dozen muffins. Wish they'd hurry up and cool so I could eat one!
    Thanks for this recipe!

  74. Karen

I just made these muffins today. And they are delicious! So happy to have found a great chocolate banana muffin!

  75. Grrodz

  80. Heidi Wilton

    5

Fabulous muffins...perfectly balanced flavor between the chocolate and the banana! Love the sugar on top! Perfect!

  81. lisa

    5

So i just made these and super yummy. i did make some adjustments because i'm always trying to get my kids to eat a little healthier even with their dessert. So i used about 2 1/3 cup of flour and 1/3 flaxseed and 1/3 chia seed and i also added frozen spinach (the chocolate totally hides the color of the seeds and spinach). you can't taste the flaxseed or spinach at all, but the chia seeds have tiny crunch but other than that, it was delicious!

  82. Mindy

    Could I use frozen bananas?

  83. April

    5

    these were excellent

  84. Claire Geel

Amazing. I might have had a little too much flour, so I added another egg to the mix. It came out perfect.

  85. Becky

    5

I love this recipe and it works great as a vegan recipe too. I simply substitute the egg for vegan egg and use dark choc chips. Delicious thank you.

    5

Hello from India! I made these just now and they turned out UNBELIEVABLY delish!!!! And very simple to make.....Thank you so so much....I tweaked it just a lil bit as in I added 2 cups flour, some yoghurt. and lots of walnuts......very versatile recipe.

  87. Deepika Rao

Super easy and absolutely delicious! I tried this out using flaxseed because I wanted it to be eggless. Also used little milk to get the right consistency for the batter . Will make this again and again... ?

  88. Jemima

Great recipe will remember for ever!

  89. Rosannne

    4

These were delicious. I cut the sugar down to slightly more than half cup and used very ripe banana . Couple table spoons ground flax into the flour and used count oil. Yum yum

  90. Alicia

OMG amazing muffins! Doubled it and got 24 exactly. I ran out of chocolate chips so used about 1/2 cup semi sweet and 1/2 cup white chocolate chips. Made them look really pretty and delicious.

  91. Ale

    5

These muffins are delicious! I dissolved a teaspoon of espresso powder in water & added that to the wet ingredients, which I think enhanced the chocolate flavor. I also swapped out the oil for apple sauce, and halved the sugar. They turned out AMAZING! So moist, so chocolatey.

  92. Janey

Cut the sugar in half added some fresh squeezed orange juice, zest, coconut and used coconut oil they were excellent.

  93. Amanda

Hi what flour do you use? All purpose. Thanks.

  94. Sandrea

Hi, would it be possible to make a cake with this recipe ?

  95. Sandrea

  109. Roberta

    5

I absolutely am not a banana fan but I am a huge fan of these muffins! They are my go-to muffin and I crown them with a chocol glaze when a cupcake is required. I store over ripe bananas in the freezer for these and have been known to ripen bananas in the oven for the recipe. When I make these I use Mini-muffin tins.

  110. Sarah

    5

    Love love love these.
    So yummy.
Is it possible to switch banana for pineapples or carrot?

  116. Linda

    5

I made these muffins today. They were so delicious it was hard to stop eating them.

  117. Stefanie

    5

Here are the alterations I did (based on ingredients available to me):
3/4 cup sugar; 3/4 tsp baking soda, not the full teaspoon; 1 cup banana (didn't have enough); No chocolate chips; and no sugar on top

And the results were... absolutely lovely! I got 15 smallish muffins coming in at around 150 cals per, they were light and fluffy rather than dense, and there's more of a chocolatey taste than 'nana taste to them.

Thank you for posting this recipe, it was an indulgent breakfast for my birthday.

  118. Finn

    5

The best muffins I have ever made!

I’ve made chocolate banana muffins before using several different recipes but I can say that this one is definitely the best! My family loved it so much that I had to make some more. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

  123. Val

    5

Made these and the taste and smell amazing!! I reduced the sugar to half and used brown instead of white. I tried them in a mini muffin tin and they yielded 33 muffins and baked for 15 mins. Next time l’ll try adding a tsp. vanilla, and a 1/2 tsp of salt. They are still very sweet with 1/2 the sugar...I may decrease that some more or sub with honey. Great base recipe! Lots of options to tweak to your preference.

  124. Carrie

Just made these and I am NO baker. I made exactly as directed and although I filled the muffin cups waaaay too full and it took a bit longer to cook, they are absolutely delicious!

  125. Connie Carden

  126. Jodie

    5

My boyfriend and kids' favorite muffins.

  127. sharon Welborn

    5

I've made these twice now. They are so tender and moist, even my husband who's never cared for muffins didn't realize, this is no ordinary muffin. Delish. I followed directions with 2 substitutions: Coconut Sugar and Whole wheat Flour. Perfectly done in 20 mins in my silicone muffin cups. Be sure to sprinkle tops with sugar before baking...makes an amazing texture on the muffin top.

I have made these muffins numerous times now, and they are always a huge hit with my family--even my husband, who is not very fond of bananas! Thanks so much for sharing!

Just finished baking muffins for the second time per my kids request. The first time I made it was a hit that my daughter’s friends told their moms to learn how to make it. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

Just made these! They are delicious. I used melted coconut oil for the oil and 1/2 cup maple syrup in place of the one cup of sugar. With the bananas that’s plenty sweet! We used all organic ingredients too! We used mini chocolate chips and they are a winner in our house !

These are delicious. I only had dark chocolate chips but they worked great. Thanks for the recipe. It’s a nice alternative to banana bread when you need to use up those bananas.
