We had an event last week that my husband was helping out at and needed some extra goodies to take.  I wanted to try out a new pudding cookie and it turned out really great!  You can probably tell by a few of my posts that I LOVE cake batter flavors….for example:

No Bake Cake Batter Truffles

Well if you couldn’t tell before, you probably can now!  You may have also gathered from this blog that I LOVE Pudding Cookies.  Well I decided I wanted to try and combine these two loves of mine and they turned out DELICIOUS!  An amazingly soft cookie with such an amazing taste!

  3. Jill

    Um...YUM!!! These sound amazing!!!

  4. Anonymous

do you mean one package of pudding or 3.4 ounces? One package is 1 ounce and even the bigger size package is only 1.5 ounces... just wondering!

  5. The Cantelmo Family

Thanks for sharing, my daughter will love those!

  6. Anonymous

after my trial run and ruined cookies, you only need 1 ounce of the pudding mix, not 3.4 ounces!

  7. Chef in Training

@Anonymous I am sorry for the confusion and for my late response. I posted a picture of the packet I use. The only small package I am familiar with is the one pictured above and in the bottom right corner it says 3.4 oz. If you have anymore questions or if I can help in trying to figure out what went wrong, please feel free to email me at
I would love to help out in any way I can!

Hmm I just tried the recipe and the batter got so thick it made my hand mixer smoke before I even I finished mixing in the dry ingredients.

  9. Janel@hatingmartha

Yes please! These look amazing---Cake batter AND cookies...could it be?

  10. Tanya

These look super tasty. Gonna make them soon.

  11. Jennifer

Just finished making them and they are super yummy. My kids loved them as well. Thank you for the recipe!

  12. Anonymous

Do you think you could use confetti cake mix instead of using yellow cake and sprinkles???

    1. Kerrie

I was thinking this as I was standing at the store buying the yellow cake mix....went with yellow, but post if you try it :)

  13. Anonymous

Yay! Going to make them tonight! I am excited :D

  14. Real Life Reslers

  22. Anonymous

Does anyone know how many cookies come out of this recipe?

  23. Anonymous

Just made these cookies and they are sooo good. Would def recommend.@Anonymous mine made about 4doz.

  24. Jolie

Holy cow! These look tasty. Can you use confetti cake batter instead of the yellow cake mix?

  25. Anonymous

No personal offense, I think most of your stuff looks great! These were not so great. I think the sprinkles and jello pudding make them taste really processed. I'm wondering if they would turn out without the pudding mix.

  26. Anonymous

I saw comments about the thickness of the batter. They may have made the mistake I did and used an entire box of cake mix instead of 3/4 cup. Luckily I realized this before I added the flour. I just used half the flour and they turned out pretty well. Not so pretty but they tasted great. Can't wait to fix them again!

  27. Jenni

I just made a batch of these and my daughter is the happiest girl on Earth! Thank you so much for sharing!!

  28. Loni

I followed the recipe exactly and they turned out perfectly!!!! :)

  29. Anonymous

I am not typically a sweets person. However after I made these I couldn't stop eating them!

  30. ellen

Any way you can use sugar free pudding? I know that sounds crazy when you are talking about cookies, but was just curious.

  31. Allyson

This recipe sounds delicious. I'm considering adding it to my Christmas cookie list for this year. How many does this receipe make? Thanks!

  32. Jeri

I've been making these for 30 years or so, they never disappoint!! My kids loved these when they were small!!

  33. Anonymous

I love these cookies, I make them with confetti cake mix. they turn out so yummy.

  34. Jamie

these are good, the batter is thick but makes an excellent texture and thickness in the end. only needed to cook for 10 min in my oven.

  35. Anonymous

Love these! make em every holiday. My grandmother made these for all the great-grandkids as soon as they started teething. And for this she will forever be known as grandma-cookie. (we miss you)

  36. jenny

I made these the other day and ohh my......... To die for!! Turned out just like the picture.

  37. Anonymous

I just made these and they turned out soooo good, I made them exactly like the recipe says and my boyfriend ate half the batch right out of the oven!

  38. Anonymous

I just made these, they are incredible! I used the sugar free pudding mix, and used funfetti mix instead of the yellow cake/sprinkles. I rolled about 1 inch balls and it made a little over 4 dozen cookies. The batter does get thick, at that point I just starting mixing it with my hands instead of the mixer. Took about 11 minutes. Thank you for the great recipe!

  39. Anonymous

Made these tonight and they are wonderful. I don't know how people are having issues with the box of pudding. We all loved them here, they were easy to make and delicious.

  40. Anonymous

Can you substitute other cake mixes for the yellow? I have at least 3/4 of a cup of funfetti cake mix left from cake batter rice krispy treats and I have NO idea what to do with it and these look delicious and figured that way I could omit the sprinkles as well, think it may work?

  41. Chef in Training

Yes, I am guessing funfetti would still taste great! A couple other people have tried that and said it turned out delicious. I am a sprinkle lover, so I would still add some because for the little amount of cake mix going in, you probably won't get a lot of sprinkles from it. Let me know how you like them!

  42. Anonymous

I tried these and they were a huge hit! I had the funfetti cake mix on hand. Fun and easy recipe! Thanks!!

  43. Anonymous

What went wrong? Mine were so sticky that I couldn't make the dough into balls so I added more flour and now they taste like flour. They do not taste sweet at all.

  44. Anonymous

They do come out sticky, but if you chill the dough in the fridge for a bit they are perfect for rolling. Also, they taste better after fully cooled :)

  45. otterdaughter

I used butterscotch instant pudding and it came out super yummy. I'm betting lemon would be tasty too...

  46. parksbrandy88

I followed the recipe exactly, but I had a few issues. The dough was a little dry I even added 1/4bcup milk. I took half the batter with no sprinkles added mocha and lindt chocolate chunks... They were delicious. But the other ones still came out a little dry. Any ideas how to fix this? I only baked 1/2 of them so I have the rest of the dough to manipulate

  47. Anonymous

Just pulled these out of the oven! They are chewy and yummy! I did find that the first batch didn't flatten out as much as I would like (therefore not getting done in in the middle), so I kind of have cookie spheres, but they still taste wonderful - for the second batch I flattened them a little bit. Thanks for the recipe!

  48. Mandi

Mine came out chewy and delicious. I followed the recipe exactly. Thanks!

  49. Anonymous

these are amazing but did anyone else have a problem with them breaking apart? mine won't stay in a cookie shape :(

  50. A Treasured Legacy

HOLEY COW!!! I just took my first batch out the oven and they are awesome!!! the dough does get stiff but i did like someone else said and used my hands, they are perfect and puffed up.. i made mine with white cake mix and chocolate pudding.... YUMMY!!!

  51. Anonymous

I made these for my family at Christmas. They were a huge hit! They are now part of our Christmas cooking traditions.

  52. Anonymous

We have a dairy and egg allergy in our house and I had to change some ingredients (pudding mix is dairy free). turned out REALLY good! Used Dunkin Hines mix, Earth Balance(Dairy Free Butter) Jello Brand pudding, and 1/2 c. applesauce instead of the eggs. AWESOME! Thank you!

  53. Anonymous

I agree, the consistency was terrible and the cookies were just ok

  54. Anonymous

About how many cookies does one back make???

  55. Anonymous

I used cherry chips instead of the sprinkles. Took them to a get together, and they were a huge hit. I only baked mine for 8 minutes. Using a cookie scoop to measure out the dough, I got approximately 60 cookies.

  56. Lisa C

Just made these, what a GREAT idea!! So soft! Next time I think I'll add some chocolate chips :) Seems like this recipe could really be the base for any great cookie!!

  57. Anonymous

Has anybody used chocolate cake mix. I neeeeeeed to make this but don't have yellow or white mis.

  58. Susanna

I made these for Christmas with cinnomon for Snickerdoodles.... they were a total success! I have been asked to make them again and again and again. My brother specifically asked for a batch to take back to college with him. That's an A in my book!

  59. Molly

Me and a friend made these today... had no cake mix and had to make our own. Had to use chocolate milk too, because we were out of regular. And now... we're waiting for the results...

  60. Melissa Holloway

Ok I bake ALL THE TIME. I have a husband that LOVES cookie dough so I figured I would give these a try tonight. I followed the recipe EXACTLY and the dough turned out SO dry and thick. I see others have had the problem, but no solution has been posted. HELP! I would REALLY love to make these for my hubby!!!

  61. Anonymous

I'm making these right now. The cookie dough is mixed and the first batch is out...I must say I am not sold...yet. I have a Kitchen Aid mixer so the thickness of the dough was not an issue. What I'm wondering is, are you supposed to add 3/4 cup cake batter (as in follow the box recipe and add batter to it, liquid form) or just 3/4 cups of dry cake mix? This may explain some of the issues we are having.

  62. Anonymous

can you use "cook and serve pudding mix" instead of the instant??

  63. Kaitlyn

@Melissa, I had the same problem. Mine came out in a sphere shape instead of flat, and it took longer to bake them. Everyone that tried them enjoyed them but I felt like they were too dry and I don't know how to fix it.

  64. Anonymous

I made these, and they are delicious!! The whole family loved them. I know i'll have requests for them again quickly (:

  65. Sarah Keller

I've made these 3 times in the last 3 weeks :x They're delicious!! Today I needed some for my husband's work pot-luck but I was out of vanilla pudding so I substituted Lemon... AWESOME! Everyone loves them wherever I take them.

  66. Anonymous

Is the cake mix dry? Or do you prepare the cake mix and then add 3/4 cup of the liquid cake mix? They look so food I can't wait to try them! Thanks

  67. alyssatrapani

I cant say how many time I have made these cookies. My family loves them especially my mom who usually doesn't eat cookies like these. They're a total hit and I love them they taste so good. This recipe hangs on my fridge!

  68. Anonymous

I was on vacation and was in the mood for making cookies! I didn't want to buy sugar and flour to make just one thing so I bought the Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix and my cookies turned out great. They were a little chewy but extra soft and delicious. I even made a few of them into icecream sandwiches by putting vanilla icecream between two cookies while they were still warm.I used one 21 oz bag of sugar cookie mix, one 1 oz box pudding, 3/4 cup dry cake mix, one stick of butter, 2 eggs, and 2 tablespoons water.

  69. Anonymous

Try using buttermilk or applesauce but let your batter come back to room temperature first.

  70. Jennifer L. Griffin

Just licked the spatula from some strawberry cake batter myself. These look really good!

  71. Anonymous

so sad they lost... cause I do not even like St. Louis Cardinals a little bit !!!

  72. Chef in Training

Sorry for the late reply, but you could definitely change up the cake mix! If you use chocolate cake mix, I would recommend using a chocolate instant pudding mix instead of the vanilla.

  73. Chef in Training

I would recommend using the instant. I know that the pudding mixes have different results. I have never used cook and serve for this recipe, so if you do, you will have to let me know how it turns out :)

  74. Hay Rhea

Dont try gingerbread cookies then, thatll def make it go up in smoke.

  75. Anonymous

Delicious! Just made this recipe with my three year old and we both love them! Used white chocolate pudding mix and they taste so good! Thanks for the recipe :)

  76. Anonymous

Add the eggs and vanilla before you add the dry pudding mix and cake mix. That way it's not so dry and hard on the mixer.

  77. Anonymous

I just made these for the first time, and I am not a baker. They were soooo good. I'll defenitely be making them again and checking out more of your recipes!

  78. Adamz

What kind of sprinkles did you use in the pictured cookies??? They are darling! Where can I find them? Thanks so much, I can't wait to try this recipe.

  79. Erin

Sounds excellent! Can't wait to make them. Thanks!

  80. Anonymous

Cardinals are the best! I was soo happy they won!!!

  81. Unknown

These are my favorite cookies ever! I didn't have all the correct ingredients this time, so I substituted white chocolate pudding and white cake mix. (double batch this time :) Still awesome!I just use the regular sprinkles from any grocery store or wal-mart. Not the little balls, but the flat round ones.

  82. Hannah {Bonne Nouvelle}

Thanks for the recipe! I made them here for a St Patrick's day treat.

  83. cortney

I made these but they never flattened out. Do you know what i may have done wrong?

  84. Bowsie Baby Boutique

I amde these today with my 3 year old, and they were AMAZING! Thank you for posting this recipe! Keep posting recipes for us to try!

  85. Birdy

I made these today with pistachio pudding for A. St. Patty's Day and B. My boyfriend LOVES pistachio pudding or almond flavored anything. So I used pistachio pudding and half almond extract and half vanilla extract. They're in the oven...the batter tasted delightful anyway. :)

  86. jbeavin

LOVE THESE COOKIES! Made them for my students. One thing tho, they're easier to put on the cookie sheet if you chill the dough for an hour first :). Thanks for sharing!

    1. Kerrie

Mine are in the fridge now...they weren't rolling..haha

  87. Anonymous

Go Cardinals!!! 11 world series championships! As Joe Buck says, "What a team! What a ride"

  88. The Dyer's

Turns out reading the recipe closely is important. I added the entire cake mix. These are the heaviest cookies EVER.

  89. The Dyer's

I'm going to go ahead and blame lack of sleep for this one. Cripes.

  90. jped

Just made these. Had to mix the ingredients with my hands to incorporate it all, but now I realize I used the whole box of cake mix. Next time I'll read more carefully. I also couldn't find the 3.4oz pudding so I used two 1oz boxes. Despite all this they still taste yummy and make a bunch.

  91. Anonymous

About how many cookies do you get out of this recipe?

  92. Rhondi ~ Big Mama's Home Kitchen

I made these for my girls last night and they were so excited when they saw the cake mix sitting on the counter. We all really love your cake batter truffles and cake batter pancakes. These cookies are now a new favorite too!

  93. Amanda S

I have a question that I didn't see addressed yet. Does it matter if I choose a box of cake mix that states "Pudding is in the mix!"? All the major brands state this on the box. I would hate to waste the ingredients and have it not turn out.

  94. Judy Maldonado

Have you ever tried it with chocolate cake, chocolate pudding and mini chocolate chips? I was wondering if it was worth trying that way.

  95. Gwen

I made these yesterday and I substituted a funfettie cake mix instead. They were so good! I just love all your recipes!

  96. Kristen

These were perfect! A huge hit at the bbq tonight...thanks!

  97. Karen Burgh

I made the above except I added 10 oz jar maraschino cherries (chopped), peacans (chopped) and chocolate chips.

    1. Karen Burgh

Oh, I left out the sprinkles and also added 2-3 Tablespoons of the cherry juice. They are so yummy!

  98. Emily

I've made these three times now, and they are to die for! Thanks for sharing!:)

  99. Shelly

I've had these on my to bake list for quite some time now, and I finally just baked a batch....Absolutely delicious! Thanks for another great recipe!

  100. Sarah

These cookies are delicious and might I add EASY. I am always suprised by people who don't read recipes and then give the writer a hard time. If you don't want to waste ingredients, make sure to read thoroughly. Also, if the majority of people have success and a few people don't, those few should wonder what they did wrong rather than blame the recipe. Thanks, I will be making these again!

  101. Kirsten

Going to make these in a few min, cake batter and pudding in a cookie, my 3 favorite things! I'm so excited!!!!

  102. Claire

I made these yesterday. Turned out great! I do have one change I would add for the next time I make them-- I am totally going to add white chocolate chips! :) YUM!

  103. Tori

Just made them. They are delicious!! Taste like cake batter :)

  104. Julie

Here from Pinterest... Making these now well as soon as my fiancé finds my sprinkles he apparently hid on me! I am so excited to make these! I did have to make one change, I used sugar free yellow cake mix instead of the regular. It's all I had on hand if they turn out badly Ill head to the store though :). The batter so far tastes great!

  105. Julie

Found these from Pinterest! Sounds delicious!! About how many does this recipe yield? I need between 6-7 dozen.

  106. Danielle

Could you use funfetti cake mix instead of the white cake mix?

    1. Chef in Training

Yes you most certainly could! I have before and it is delicious!

  107. Darla

Thank you for the recipe!! I love trying new things with cake mixes and these are easy and delicious!!

  108. Laura

Omg I just made these for the first time and they are DELICIOUS. They should come with a "hazardous to your diet" warning. Yum! Thanks for the recipe! I love how friendly they look, and my daughter can't wait until she can take some in her lunch Monday.

  109. Lorette

I just made this recipe and it didn't quite look like the ones you show. I followed directions and used whole wheat flour instead. They taste ok. They did not flatten they stayed in a ball shape?? thoughts??

  110. Helene

I just made these today, they are really good, I will make them again!

  111. Dawna

I stumbled upon these yesterday and decided to try making them tonight. Can you say delish and super easy to make? My house smells awesome and my family loved them. Thank you for sharing your recipe with us!

  112. Mallory

These cookies are AWESOME!!! I used the Funfetti cake mix and sugar free vanilla pudding and they are AWESOME!!! I have been looking for a LONG time for a really great cookie and this is it!!! Thank you for the great recipe!!!

  113. Adriana

about how many cookies does it make?

  114. Christy

Made these for work and also for a family gathering--hit with both crowds!

  115. Rebecca

How much sprinkles do you use in this recipe ? Thanks!

  116. Morgan S

Wait so do you use a whole package of Instant pudding mix or only 1 oz?

  117. Stacy Hovan

How many cookies does this recipe make? I have to make 4 dozen for a cookie exchange. Thank you!

    1. K.B.

I just made these cookies and I got 25 cookies out of the batter.

  118. Amosannette

So sad right now. I messed it up. I had to toss it all because I didn't read the directions right. In the directions, when you said to add the cake mix I added the cake mix. The whole bag. It was only when I was mixing in the flour that I began to notice how thick and dry the batter was. I then re-read the ingredients and saw that I only needed 3/4 of a cup of the cake mix not the whole box. : ( I wasted butter, flour, the last of my brown sugar... so sad. I was excited because I was using a pistachio pudding mix instead of vanilla. It was all I had but I thought it would probably taste pretty good and it was turning into a really fun color as well. Sigh, live and learn.

  119. Sarah

I made these cookies for Christmas and they were AMAZING!! So chewy and soft!!! Best part is there is plenty of leftover yellow cake mix to make another batch or two. Can't wait to try the other cake batter recipes!!

  120. Wyojrt made the same mistake as several others and ended up using the entire box of cake mix. It was so dry it would not hold together in a I added canola oil until I could get it to stick together. I should not have bothered as they tasted very flour-y that way and took twice as long to bake. Will try again sometime in the future with the correct amounts, but not tonight...I am fresh out of ingredients for tonight.

  121. Peggy

I found thiis recipe on Pinterest.. make them all the time! I also do variations such as Banana, Pumpkin Spice, Coconut.. In each variation I use corresponding cake mix and pudding mix (Banana cream pudding and banana cake mix, for example). In the pumpkin spice I use gingerbread cake mix and pumpkin spice pudding mix. Everyone loves these cookies!! These get requested every couple weeks! Thanks so much for the recipe!!!

  122. K.B.

I made these cookies today as a sweet treat for Valentine's weekend and this is a 5-star recipe!! They taste delicious and hours later they still taste fresh, not hard and crunchy! These were easy to make and everyone loved them!! :)

  123. Maggie

Thank you so much for this recipe. It's always a crowd pleaser. I add a couple handfuls of white chocolate chips and that makes it that much better! Another tip for these cookies is that they freeze wonderfully! And they are delicious cold.

  124. Ruth

I was just wondering if you know the carbs for each cookie. My son is a diabetic.

  125. julie

I just made these and the batter was a little dry so I added another tabls of butter and that helped alot

  126. Hillary

Anyone tried making these as bars? I just don't have time to scoop them all up.

  127. Stephanie

YUM!!!! I love everything cake batter and these were no exception!! They were delicious and I will definitely save the recipe! Thank you :)

  128. Christina

About how many cookies does the recipe above make? I am making them for a birthday and want to be sure I have enough. Thanks!

  129. jayme

I just made these and they are wonderful! The perfect sugar cookie in my opinion!! They were easy to make, the batter was nice and fluffy (and it didn't stick to my ice cream scoop-style scoop) and baked to a nice consistency in 12 minutes! Thanks so much for the recipe!

  130. Robin Calhoun

These look ever so yummy! How many dozen do they make? Also, are they able to go in the freezer and be reheated?

    1. Tahreer

I was wondering.....HOW LONG DO THE COOKIES stay fresh for? thank you :)

  131. TJ

How many does this recipe make?

  132. Katie

Omg, these cookies are amazing! They came out perfect. I made them with a slight bit (maybe 3 tablespoons?) more cake mix cause I'm a huge fanatic of cake batter. When I was making them I'd worried they would maybe turn out a bit dry because the dough was a little bit but they actually came out the opposite! It still has the cake consistency (so you'll need to eat them with a drink) but its a very soft cookie. Good job on coming up with these! I didn't have any problems with making them. I did melt the butter a bit before I added it in so maybe that can help others? I also didn't use sprinkles cause I'm not a big fan. And instead of preheating my oven to 350, I set it lower to 325 (my oven runs a bit hotter than others) so maybe a lower temp could help others too. But yeah, they're really good! Definitely need to save recipe.

  133. Brittany k

How many cookies does this recipe make?

  134. Anonymous

Could you make this with a chocolate cake batter and chocolate pudding?

    1. Kimm

I was wondering the same thing.

  135. Marian Curtin

I would like to copy just the recipe! Not all the ads and comments. Please help!

    1. Chef in Training

so sorry about that! a print button should be displayed on the recipe card now.

  136. Jean Rohrbach

Are there any modifications for high altitude baking?

    1. Chef in Training

This was made at high altitude :)

  137. Frances

Question: I am a pretty good home can this recipe only call for 3/4 cup for cookie dough? Most cookie recipes call for at least 2 - 2 1/4 cups of flour. It will really turn out good without the added flour?

    1. Chef in Training

it calls for 3/4 cup yellow cake mix and 2 1/4 cups flour. Hope this helps :)

  138. Patsy Van Antwerp

I can't wait to make these cookies for my grandkids, they love anything with sprinkles. I wanted to ask if I can use unsalted butter instead?
