Chicken Cordon Bleu Pasta

Sometimes we are all in need of a little inspiration when it comes to dinners.  Last week, I posted on my Facebook Page, that I had chicken but was wondering what to make with it.  Several of you gave amazing ideas and one of them in particular popped out at me… Chicken Cordon Bleu Pasta!  Only, I didn’t have a recipe to go off of, so I created one and it was DELICIOUS!  I HIGHLY recommend this dinner!

Chicken Cordon Bleu Pasta
A fun twist on a classic recipe! This is a recipe the entire family will enjoy!
Recipe type: Entrée
Cuisine: Italian
  • 10-12 oz. penne or ziti pasta
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 (8 oz) block cream cheese
  • ½ tsp. onion powder, more or less to taste
  • ½ tsp. garlic salt, more or less to taste
  • 1½ cup shredded swiss cheese, separated
  • 2 chicken breasts, cooked and cut into strips
  • ¾ cup bacon, cooked and chopped
  • ¾ cup diced ham
  • bread crumbs
  1. Cook pasta according to its package's directions. Drain. I always add a little olive oil after I drain it and stir in around so the pasta noodles don't stick together or the pot.
  2. Heat cream cheese on stove over medium low heat until melted. Stir in heavy cream. Stir until completely combined. Add onion powder and garlic salt until it tastes how you would like it to. Stir 1 cup of cheese until smooth consistency.
  3. In a 9x13, layer noodles, chicken, bacon and ham. Pour sauce over top. Sprinkle top with ½ cup cheese and bread crumbs.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F for 15 minutes or until heated through.

Sorry about that. It is 2 cups of heavy cream. Thanks for catching that, I added it to the ingredient list now :)

You say in directions to add heavy whipping bream, but it’s not listed on your ingredients. How much? Please advise.

Whoops, guess I should have read the recipe completely before commenting–it does call for ham!! Sorry about that..

    • Chef in Training

Yes you do. Sorry the new recipe plug-in for WordPress sometimes disappears or makes ingredients/directions disappear. I added it back in. Thank you for catching that. Have a great day :)

Never mind! I had scrolled past the first direction – sorry! Looks fabulous, making it tonight for my fam.

  3. Ever since my first visit to your blog, when you’d posted the Oreo Fluff recipe (which I made, and which my husband and son DEVOURED), I’ve learned to grab a napkin before my next visit because I’m guaranteed to drool over your recipes. This one is no exception. It looks amazing! Going to give it a try later this week. Thanks!

Hi, this looks awesome! Do you think you could substitute Greek yogurt for the cream or some of the cream? Looks a bit decadent but I wondered what you thought about this substitution. Thanks!

  5. Tina

I tried this the night before last but used veggie pasta, 1/3 less fat cream cheese and fat free half and half. It was amazing! Thank you so much for posting!

Hi Nicky, I’ve been reading your blog every day for ages, and have made quite a few things, but have always been too shy to comment before! But I couldn’t not comment on this, it was totally amazing! I didn’t even have chicken, so left it out, and it was still totally gorgeous. Thank you so much for all your recipes and inspiration, keep them coming!!
    Thanks again, Elizabeth

Oh I also meant to say I used milk instead of cream to try to be a bit healthy, and it was still yummy ;o)

This recipe sounds so delicious! I am excited to try it! For the bread crumbs… should I use dry bread crumbs or soft bread crumbs? Thanks!!

  8. Kaitlin

My sister and I made this tonight and I have to tell you that it’s amazing!! It’s definitely going to be one of our go-to dishes from now on!!

  9. Hi, you will have seen that the new Food on Friday ingredient is chicken. I noticed that you did this post on chicken which I think would be great linked in. We already have a collection of over 40 recipes which is wonderful. At the moment the Food on Friday edition with the most links is Beef with 73 – I get the feeling though that Chicken could become the new record holder!
Have a great day and thank you for following Carole’s Chatter. It ‘s nice to have you along for my blogging journey.

This sounds so good! But I was wondering what you think I could use instead of heavy cream. I have read that fat free half & half would work? Is that true or is there better suggestions?

  11. Trixie

I made this for dinner tonight. It’s VERY tasty and VERY VERY rich. Thank you for the recipe, I will definitely be making this again. (0=

  12. I found this recipe through The Great Pinterest Hunt and I made it for my family last night. We all LOVED it!!!! By far the BEST Pinterest recipe I have found! I look forward to exploring more of your recipes. :-)

  13. Leigh

found you on pinterest and just made this tonight. YUM!! ALL 4 KIDS ATE!!!
Thats an accomplishment! Thanks so much for sharing!

  14. Brittany

I want to feed this a group of 11 adults and 3 children… Should I double it and make 2 pans, or would this be plenty? It looks fantastic, I can’t wait to try it!

  15. I found this on pinterest and made it the other night – my family loved it! I just posted it on my blog and linked back to you. Thanks so much for the recipe, it’s a keeper!

  16. Jazmine

Just made it. Soo delicious and I am soo full. Can’t wait for my 2yo son to try it. The only thing I added was a bit of dijon mustard.

  17. erin

this sounds delish. Could you use yogurt instead of the heavy cream? Seems very rich, fattening and caloric and just wondering if that could be a substitution?

  18. Elizabeth B.

I’d love to make this, but I’m not sure where to add the other 1 cup of shredded cheese. Please advise? Thanks!

  19. Lorena

I made lunch for 17 people this past week. I decided to try this recipe to make for the meal. Not only did my husband love it when I made it for practice, but everyone at the lunch loved it too! It is very easy to make and very flavorful.

I am considering making this for 17 adults. There is no servings noted for this recipe so how did you decide on the amounts needed for a large crowd?

  20. Shantel

Just made this with some adjustments. I used skim milk instead of heavy cream and it worked perfectly. The cream cheese thickens the milk up great. I also only used 1/2 of a fat free Cream cheese block and melted it with 1/2 c onions. Plenty of flavor with my adjustments, just a bit healthier.

I made this tonight and HONESTLY it was probably my favorite meal. EVER. Thanks so much for the recipe! I did add a bit of paprika in the cheese sauce, but otherwise I made it exactly like yours! SO GOOD!

  22. I just made this the other night, and let me say.. it was very tasty!! I didn’t have penne or ziti on hand, so just used what I had in my pantry (Radiatore) and pre-cooked chicken breasts over the weekend to use during the week for meals, making it a lot quicker to cook after work. Time saver of also using pre-packed ham cubes and bacon bits was helpful too. The sauce was very tasty and the meal came together well! Good as left overs too! Thanks for sharing your recipe!

  23. Lisa Saragosa

Made this tonight, husbad and kids loved it..Husband said it was perfect! Followed the recipe to the tee!! Did add a little more bacon:) THANK YOU!! Will be making again!

  24. Sherry Lochner

Ahhhh-mazing! Thank you for posting! I used 1 cup cream and 1 cup half-n-half. I also used butter crackers instead of bread crumbs on top.

  25. TerryFamilyMomma

Has anyone frozen this meal? Tried it for the first time tonite and my husband was literally speechless! Sooooooooo good!

  26. Latasha

Made this tonight for dinner. I paired it with sweet peas. It was delicious! Boyfriend went back for seconds. This is a keeper.

  27. This recipe was very good, but I found the method to not work for the recipe. My suggestion would be to make a white sauce with 3Tab butter…3Tab of flour 2-3 cups of milk or 1/2&1/2 . I prefered this the second day after I mixed it with this white sauce and adding additional 2cups of cheese to it.
Its not that the recipe tasted bad…. its just the cheese isnt at all creamy like it is by the addition of a cheese sauce. I will make again..But I will use my gut knowing that I should have made the white sauce to begin with.

  28. Shirley Leyva

You might also try it with a mix of swiss and gruyere cheeses. I am going to try this. My husband LOVES Chicken Cordon Blue. Might also mix some cheese with the breadcrumbs or use panko.

  29. Donna Graham

Made this tonight my husband really liked it! I did not have any ham so left it out, it was still delicious! I did cut the recipe in half since it was just the two of us. Can’t wait to make this for family dinner!!! Yummy!!!!!

  30. Melanie Bainter

I made this last night for my husband and one of his friends and they couldn’t stop saying how good it was the entire time they were eating. Even after, they kept saying Thank you for making dinner!! :) IT WAS SO GOOD! It was a little rich and I’d try using something a little different than the heavy cream next time just because I can’t bare looking at all the calories that’s in that little pint of goodness. And I’d use more chicken – just because I LOVE chicken in this recipe. Thank you so much for sharing!

  31. Sarah Doyle

The only way this could be better, is if it were TOTALLY GUILT FREE! NO CALORIES! Wowzers, I ate way to much, lol! My 4 little boys enjoyed it as well, delish! Thank you!

  32. Christina

Just made this… I halved the recipe (Since I was just cooking for lil’ ol me) and it came out PERFECTLY. It’s fantastic, a keeper for sure!

  33. Amy

Made this last night for dinner – it was FANTASTIC!!! I used half & half instead of heavy cream to save a few calories, light cream cheese, used shell pasta and used only 1/2 cup Hormel bacon pieces (again to save a few calories and to simplify it a little!) – we LOVED it!! Thanks for a wonderful recipe!

  34. Arica

I just started cooking for my boyfriend and I’m always confused on what the side should be. Like to this meal, what would be a good side?

  35. Becca

I made this tonight and was SO EXCITED to eat it because it looked super good, but then I tried it….
The swiss cheese, heavy cream, cream cheese sauce obviously didn’t turn out for me :-( It smells and tastes super nasty and maybe burnt? It didn’t look burnt when I was mixing/melting it. What did I do wrong? I’m super bummed because that was A LOT of food (pasta, chicken, bacon, etc) and would have fed us for a week! Plus it looked super delish! Any suggestions? I’m would like to try again as I’m sure it was operator error… but I want to know what I did wrong so I can fix it and not ruin another dish. Thanks…

  36. Jazz

It looks like a great recipe to try! My boyfriend loves the original chicken cordon bleu recipe so I sure he’ll love to eat this at work! I was wondering how much this recipe serves for?

  37. Kate Lorenzon

Oooh I have a similar recipe that I haven’t made in a while… Might pull that old trick out if my magic hat this week. I use a ready to serve rotisserie chicken from the food store, adds another special flavor!!!!

  38. Dani

So glad I stumbled across this recipe! Had to use milk instead ofheavy c ream and used different cheese and only chicken. (using up what I had left in my pantry/fridge) and my family loved it! Without telling him what the recipe was called my husband said it reminded him of Chicken Cordon Blue! Win for dinner last night

  39. Traci

This was great! I made it the other night and my son went back for thirds. I had to stop him so he wouldn’t get sick before going to marching band practice.

  40. Monica

Just a quick question…the photo shows what looks like tomatoes or roasted red peppers, as well as basil and/or oregano–are these included? or did you use Italian bread crumbs? and if so, how much? Thanks!

  41. Amanda Zimmerman

This pasta is fantastic! I will definitely be making this again some time soon. Everything I’ve made from this blog has been wonderful and I try to make at least one new recipe a week.

  42. Tami

i was wondering about how many servings this makes. I’m going to make it for my Christmas party for eight people and think I probably would need to double it.

  43. sheri

Hello! I did not have any cream so I made a white sauce and pretended that is was. Followed the rest and it came out great, thanks for the post!

  44. Deborah Mielke

Very good recipe. Would use at least half milk instead of cream next time as it was a bit too rich. Would also add a bot of chpped parsley for color.

  45. gumbalina

in the oven now…cant wait to try it……i also added some asparagus bits thats i had and mozzerella cheese on top and garlic flavored panko bread crumbs….smells like heaven
