Better than Anything Cake

This cake is a classic!  I don’t even know where this recipe originates from because I (and my mom) have been making it for YEARS!  It is one of my “go-to” recipes for a easy and DELICIOUS dessert!  It is “Better than Anything” because it combines all things great!… chocolate, caramel, sweetened condensed milk (is it just me or could anyone else drink that stuff?!), cool whip, and heath bars! Okay, wow… I feel like I need a piece right now!

Enjoy!

*NOTE* you can combine the sweetened condensed milk and caramel topping in a separate bowl, stir together and then pour on cake, but I just use the easy method so I don’t have to dirty another dish :)

Yummm! I love this cake too and want some right now. Your recipe is better than mine becasue mine doesn't call for sweetened condensed milk. Gotta make this today, thanks! Love your blog and your pictures!

    1. MyKitty!

Instead of the caramel topping, you can use a jar of condensed milk. You just make soft toffee (caramel) of the milk, boiling the unopened jar in water. I learnt this from my Russian hubby. I also love to pour some sweetened condensed milk in a cup of coffee.

    2. Carla Rainero-Brice

How long do u boil the condensed milk for to make toffee?

    3. Lori

Carla, you have to make sure the can is completely covered with water and boil 3 hours, keep adding water as needed. Let the can cool completely, and open a wonderful can of creamy caramel! Makes great turtles too! If you need more info, just google it.

    4. Kyle

      5

What you are making is Dulce de Leche. Be careful while cooking and keep the can covered in water constantly since the can can explode.

  2. Ann

I LOVE this! But I use Butterfingers/not Heath bars! And I mix the milk & caramel in a bowl and pour over the cake! Yummy!!!

  3. kelly

This looks amazing and yes, I "could" drink the sweetened condensed milk!!! lol Just pinned this! Now just need to "find" a reason to celebrate...Father's Day!!

  4. patsy

Is there a eay to add this to my pinterest site?

Also, do you have a "Pin it " button on your toolbar? You can get one on the pinterest home page or help section or whatever they call it.

  5. Jessica

How does this only have 5 ingredients! That's so temptingly simple. I'd love to try this with different candy bars -- so easy to mix things up that way!

  6. Patricia

I've made this for years, only difference is I use a German chocolate cake. And, I put the sweetened condensed milk and caramel on while cake is warm, then chill. When cold, put on the whipped topping. So good!

    1. Carol Erickon

      5

      I do this too!

  7. Jayne

Yum! This looks delicious. I'm just not sure what a Heath bar is. Is it like a Skor bar??

    1. Marla

      @Jayne-I couldn't find Heath bars so I used Skor~delicious!

    2. gay smith

Yes. A Skor bar is similar to a Heath bar. Chocolate covered toffee.

    3. Susan Shields

My boyfriend does not like chocolate. I made this one day and now it is his favorite cake. lol

    4. Carol Erickon

It is a carmel candy covered in chocolate it is a harder candy

  8. Jenny

Yes, I could drink sweetened condensed milk from the can and I actually have. LOL! That stuff is good!

    This looks so yummy!

    1. MyKitty!

Try sweetened condensed milk in a cup of coffee. It's a treat.

  9. valerie

We call this Goo Cake and add the milk and caramel as son as it comes out of the oven so they melt into the hot cake. We then keep it in the fridge overnight and serve it cold. It seems to get better the longer it stays in the fridge but usually doesn't Last too long because it is so goooood.

  10. Anna

How many holes do you poke in the cake?

    1. Carol Erickon

      5

I poke at LEAST 35 Holes, this makes sure caramel and sweetened condensed milk gets ALL through the cake

  11. Cheryl Webb

Is a Heath chocolate bar like a Skor Bar?
We don't have Heath here in Nova Scotia, Canada!
    Thanks!

    1. Kathy

Yes Skor bar is very similar to Heath bars. I have made this using ice cream hot fudge topping in place the caramel too. LOVE LOVE LOVE this cake! its a "make and take" cake... meaning you make it and take it else where, so you arent tempted to eat it all yourself! =)

    2. Gail

Yes, I believe the candy is similar in taste, but I am not sure about the size. I remember the Skor to be a flat candy bar. The Heath Bars are a crunchy toffee bar with nuts and covered in chocolate. I hope the explaination helps!

  12. Jane

I've always known this recipe as Better than Sex Cake.....it is always a big hit!!

    1. Peggy Essenmacher

      5

That’s what I had known it as but after having kids we started calling it Heath Heaven 😊

  13. Aurelia

This cake looks incredibly tasty, sinful and sensuous... Wow!

  14. sevans

Have done something similar for years. Instead of sweetened condensed milk and cameral topping, I use chocolate syrup. Layer german chocolate cake, chocolate syrup (generous portion), crumbled Heath bar and whipped topping in dish. Do this twice and then refridgerate.

  15. Sara

Oh my how YUMMY~!!!!!!! Hope you can link up at my trendy tuesday party!! http://www.sweetlittlegals.com/2012/06/trendy-tuesday-4.html

  16. Marla

I made this the other night and OH MY WORD!!! Everyone had an absolute fit over this-even my brother-in-law who NEVER eats sweets! I know I will be making this for years to come-thank you so much for sharing!

  17. Katie

I have made this for years. I too, mix together the sweetened condensed milk and the caramel and put it on while the cake is still warm. I also sprinkle some of the Heath bar over the top of the cake when it is warm and cover with foil. It makes the candy melt into the top of the cake. Once cooled, I put into fridge. When ready to serve I frost it with cool whip and add remaining Heath candy to the top. So yummy!

  18. Rachel @ Bakerita

This sounds so amazing. I want some right now! Completely decadent, and completely delicious :)

  19. Lynn

This looks delicious and I'm gonna have to make it. I, too, could just drink sweetened condensed milk. Love it.

  20. Rabia

This is HEAVEN!!! I can almost taste it from my laptop screen!

  21. Natasha

oh wow this looks so nice - now following you

    Natasha xx

  22. Valery Elias

Looks really easy and sounds luscious!

  23. Mandee

I made this cake this morning...IT IS AWESOME. I only eat gluten free so I made it with a gluten free chocolate cake and all I can say is WOW. I have never had a gluten free cake taste so good. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

  24. Elizabeth

I've loved this cake for a long time now. My mother-in-law introduced it to me years ago, but she made the cake from scratch using the "Baker's Chocolate" recipe for their German chocolate cake recipe. I have to tell you, that it's wonderful!
Yes, in my family we actually do drink the condensed milk right out of the can! I'm from Brazil and we do it all the time!

  25. Linda Long

This looks fabulous Veronica. I will have to make this soon.

  26. zazzy

    Hi,
This dessert looks delicious and i really want to make it for a dinner party that i have coming up. However, im based in the UK, i cant seem to find any Heath or Skor bars where i live :-( What chocolate can i substitute instead.

    Thanks in advance

    1. Morgan

Just regular toffee bits would work!

  27. Kimberly Starks

Making this right now!! Can't wait to try it!!

  28. Carole

Super use of chocolate, Nikki. It would be great if you linked it up to this week's Food on Friday: Chocolate

  29. kathy

I make this cake with chocolate fudge topping instead of the sweetned condensed milk. It is delicious!! I will have to try the condensed milk version :)

  30. CobyLyn

Interesting, I make a Better than Sex cake (my husband calls it Almost Better than Sex Cake) just like this but also add a bottle of hot fudge topping after the sweetened condensed milk & caramel topping. Try adding the hot fudge, it is AMAZING!!! (You have to heat it up a bit 1st and stir it so it will pour easily :)

  31. Kaelie

I love this cake as well! I mix a small box of vanilla instant pudding into the cool whip and it adds a nice touch as well! Yummy!

  32. DeeDee

I just want you to know that I am an absolut fan of your website! Everything you posted, I tried and it comes out perfect!!!!! Thank you so much.

  34. Sheryl @ Lady Behind The Curtain

This pinboard has re pinned this cake as their own. Here is the link! http://pinterest.com/oliveraxjy/best-foods-and-drinks/
All the pictures on this board are stollen. I have reported them to pinterest. I don't know if anything else can be done.
    ~Sheryl @ Lady Behind The Curtain~

    1. Suzanne M

Do you understand how Pinterest works? People pin things they like and other people click on the picture and come to the website. That is how I got here. While I am here I will look at the rest of the blog and maybe check out some of the advertisers. No where did they take credit for the recipe. The link brought me here and I checked it out. That is how it works..

  35. Mackenzie

I just got back from the store to make this and I am so excited! My family and my boyfriend love Heath bars so I can't wait for them to try it! I unfortunately can only have a single bite due to a strict diet I am on but it's okay! :) I will let you know how it turns out!

  36. I

My friend made this for us - DELICIOUS.

  37. Pam

Quick question: Can you freeze this or do you have any suggestions for serving this at a tailgate party on a hot day.
Another quick question: have you ever made this in cupcake version? (may be easier to transport for tailgate)
    Thanks for your help!

    1. Rae

Hello! I made this last week! It was delicious (my boyfriend was making all kinds of noises while eating his cake! lol), If you are looking to "make and take" these, I would say make them the day of your event. It was much better the first day than the second. My cake started loosing its texture with all the deliciousness in it(but I have texture issues). And while I didn't make them as cupcakes. I don't see why you couldn't!

    2. teresa

Yes, you can freeze this cake. Make the holes in the warm cake and drizzle with EB and caramel topping. Wait til the cake has completely cooled, then cover and place in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, add whipped topping and candy bits. Cover and freeze. I wrap all edges with Saran Wrap. Have successfully stored in freezer up to a month. It is very moist. Our family loves it this way.
PS I am careful not to store foods with strong flavors in the same freezer. =)

  38. Cherry Pie

I got my recipe from my Gram. She called it "Better Than Sex Cake" (yikes Gram!) But we use german chocolate cake mix & we also pour a jar of chocolate fudge or hot fudge topping onto the cake. SOOOO good! I always get compliments & asked for the recipe OR to make it for someone :)

  39. Christina

My mom and I have made this cake for years, without the cool whip though. We call it Euphoria Cake, so yummy!! Can't wait to try it with the cool whip!!

  40. Tara

Think this would be good with white cake? We aren't fans of chocolate cake around here but all the rest sounds SO good.

  41. Joy Franklin

This is my absolute favorite cake in the world!! We always called it "Fat Mans Cake"

  42. Felisha harshman

Can you make these into cupcakes?!

  43. Tonya Steele

Hi: I just found y our website surfing. This cake sounds heavenly. Did you make it up? I am going to post this recipe on my website tomorrow and I will link it back to you. Have a great day and keep the recipes coming!

  44. Kelli

This looks amazing! We have a church dinner coming up and I think that this might be the dessert that I take! Thanks a million!

  45. Annette

This recipe is good, but here's how you make it even BETTER. My family has been making this cake for decades. We call it the Robert Redford or "Better than Sex Cake". I will just simplify this for you using the above recipe. Use a German chocolate cake mix instead of just a chocolate cake. On step 4 I only use 1/2-3/4 of the sweetened condensed milk, here's why....Are you ready for this?? Step 5, mix 1/2 jar of Mrs. Richardson's butterscotch caramel with 1/2 Mrs. Richardson's hot fudge topping. Pour over cake. Continue on with the rest of the above instructions. This recipe didn't come from the side of a box of cake mix. Enjoy!

  46. Nancy L

We from Indiana call this "Better than Sex Cake"..........we made it and love it!!!!

  47. Gail

Have made this for years also using German chocolate cake mix like one of the other posted.. We called it "Better than Sex"! Yummy!!!

  48. Jennifer Pettry

I made this cake with this recipe yesterday, and it was delicious! And very simple! :)

  49. Heather Lucius

We make this cake ALL the time. It is always better the next day once it chills in the fridge. Excellent!!!!

  50. Rebekah

Thanks so much. This cake was delish. I can't wait to make again with snickers instead.

  51. Nonna

Just made this cake. It's chilling in the fridge. I hope it tastes as good as it looks! I'll let you know

  52. Nonna

Oh my Gosh. I was just reading all the comments and "the Lady Behind the curtain " really seems a little uptight. Had you not posted this wonderful cake on this website I would of never found it or made it.. Thank you so much for sharing. I enjoy going through all your receipts. Gives me wonderful ideas. I love to cook.. Can't wait to try my cake with my grandkids

  53. Nonna7

Ok. So here's the deal...when I first made this cake and chilled a few hours I felt it was amazing. The second day I thought perhaps it was a little to sweet and thought to myself the next time I make it I may cut the caramel and condensed milk in half...now on the third day it seems the caramel and the condensed milk soaked back up into the cake to make it gooey chocolate cake. I would however add a bit more cool whip to make the top layer a little thicker. The lightness of the cool whip would be a nice touch for the richness of the cake. Wow. There's half a cake left and I will now stop testing it so I can continue to fit into my jeans. Lol. I wish my family would finish the darn cake before I decide I need to try some more... Just sayin..

  54. Mary Jo Pierce

What a drooling delicious cake! I had to chuckle at #8 with "Store leftovers in fridge." The chance of any leftovers is highly unlikely! Great post! Thanks!

  55. ADougals

This looks absolutely delicious and I am definitely going to make it.

  56. Christy

I made this tonight as we had company over, and it was so good. I don't want to share any of the leftovers! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!

  57. Greta

I can't wait to make this (found you on Pinterest)! Do you know if I could prepare this on a cake board instead of in the pan? Just for presentation purposes....
    Thanks!

  58. teri

WOW! I just made this cake and am counting down the hrs till i can eat some. Making it for my work buddies. Husband said, "please, get it out of house so i dont eat it all". It looks scrumptious

  59. Lyn Hamilton

I've made this cake many times and it is always a hit. One of the guys at work calls it my "history cake" because he says as soon as I put it down, it's history. I can't wait to try it with the marshallow cream!!

  60. Tara

I make this cake every year for a food auction fund raiser at my husband's work. I change it up a little bit though. After, you put the caramel on I let it sit overnight and then I warm up hot fudge ice cream topping and spread a thin layer over the top, and finally add the Heath chips. No Cool Whip. I enjoy both ways of making this dessert.

  61. Sharon

I have made this cake for years the only diferance is that we call it Better Than Sex Cake. Also we make a moist choch cake, wait for it to cool & then put holes in it with a wooden handle of a wooden spoon, then pour your condensed cream milk in & then your carmel topping in after that. You then put the cake in the fridge over night so it can all set up. Then you put your cool whip or whip topping on top of the cake, we don't put any kind of candy bars that are crushed on top of it, I suppose you could, but we just never have, everyone said they have loved my cake the way it is! You can make this cake different ways I guess, so basically it's to each there own. As long as it comes out the way you want it to & like it that's all that matters!

  62. Karen

Hi Nikki - I was lucky enough to stumble upon this recipe yrs ago in a recipe book just for deserts published in..I think the 70's or 80"s..
Yes Jane is right.! It was originally dubbed "Better than sex cake".
I work in a salon - (99% of women) - there is always a ton of compliments.. and much fun with comments (you can imagine...) when this cake is brought in.. It is the BEST cake and is my "definite go-to" to impress company or friends!

  63. Keri

Hi! Just a time saving tip I found! My grocery store actually sells HEATH BAR CRUMBLES! So you don't need to chop the Heath bars, just zip open the bag and sprinkle1 Viola! This is on my stove, getting ready to be devoured and it looks delish!

  64. sabrina

How big should the holes be/how many?

  65. Brenda

I just made this cake for a meeting. The meeting has been postponed and trying to find out if we can freeze this cake and i can use it at the next meeting maybe in a week. Can we freeze this cake??????

  66. Pat

Looks so yummy, I'm braving the heatwave to bake this for company tonight! Thanks..

  67. Cindy

I make this cake with a marshmallow cool whip frosting. It is soooo good. Thanks for the recipe.

  68. Dana

Thanks for the recipe! It's currently in the oven cooking for my Mom's birthday! She's going to be pleasantly surprised :)

    1. Julianne

Kitty, You can just use whipped cream with a little vanilla sugar and melis instead of the cool whip. Cool whip is just a non-dairy ready made whipped cream.

      Julianne from Norway

  69. MyKitty!

Hi! looks delicious. I'm based in Stockholm, Sweden. We don't have all the ingredients needed Dorothys yummy cake. What is Cool Whip? Any suggestions on something to use instegs of it. There is an American Food Store in Stockholm, but I'd prefer to use ordinarie indredients.

    1. MyKitty!

My IPad wrote Dorothys and insteag. I meant to write "in this" and "instead. Sorry!

  70. ML

In Canada we have Skorr bars, that I think are similar to Heath bars. So we call it Skorr bar cake and use devil's food cake mix. We also put the broken Skorr bars on the cake as well as on the cool whip.

  71. Mermommaof3

This sounds great, and I am going to make it for Christmas. I have a question. If I made it the day before, would it be good the next day? I didn't know how long it could be in the fridge before it started to not be so good. Thanks!

  72. Brandye

I love this cake. Make it all the time with 1 exception. Instead of using sweetened condensed milk and jarred caramel sauce I use cajeta which is a super gooey and rich caramel sauce that is made from goats milk but it actually has the consistency of sweetened condensed milk. It's amazing. You can't always find it at the regular grocery store but if you have a good latin market around they always have it. I no longer eat regular caramel sauce. Yum!!

  73. Kristen

This looks good and I plan to make it Saturday. If we have a 40 minute drive will it keep that koon? Or will the topping melt?

  74. Stephany

Just wanted to let you know i made this cake. Absolutely wonderful! So easy and not too sweet. To be honest i was expecting a massive sugar dump in my mouth and then spitting it out, but no, everybody loved it. I whipped my own fresh cream and hardly sweetend it to help balance it out, but even still, i think it would have been okay using coolwhip if that's what someone wanted to go with. This is a keeper. Thank you.

  75. Jen

Does the sweetened condensed milk make it wet like a tres leche cake? I'm trying to avoid that consistency.

  76. Jane White

Oooh. That looks way too sweet for me (and I love sweets)! I get a toothache just looking at it.

  77. Shelly

I made this cake 2 times in 3 days for work and home and everyone loved it! Super easy to make. Will be making this again in the future.

  78. maria

I've been doing it for years but I use German chocolate cake mix and that is awesome

  79. Teresa

I've made this several times, and it's always a hit. Only difference is that I've never used sweet condensed milk - only caramel topping - and german chocolate cake. It was so sweet that I can't imagine adding the sweet condensed milk, but I just may to see how it tastes.

  80. Mary Woodward

    5

We always used Mrs. Richardson's fudge sauce in a jar instead of caramel. I think I'll be trying it with the caramel sauce!!

  81. Marcia

Use Butterfinger candy bars instead of Heath. Just as good for a change.

  82. Jennifer

It was originally called "Better than Robert Redford dessert" about 30+ years ago. Now it's called "Better than Sex Cake"

  83. Paula Roy

Love this cake!! Make it with chopped Buttergingers too. Yum!!!!

  84. Kelly

    5

I love this recipe! I use skor bars tho with butter pecan cake mix! Mmmmmm.....

  85. Tim

    5

Made this for my girlfriend as a part of her graduation dinner! This cake is phenomenal! I switched out the cool whip with real whipped cream and it was heavenly. Great recipe!

  86. Sue Richards

    5

I too use German Chocolate Cake. Its delicious. I use Heath Bars or used Toffee Crunch found in the in the baking department, along with t chocolate chips and such. Thanks for the recipe.

  87. Kristy

    5

This thing is awesome!!!! Have made it with different candy and all have been good. Butterfinger, Heath and Zagnut. Mixed a few of the bits in the batter when I baked it as well. YUMMY!!!!!!!!

  88. Betty T.Smith

i bet if you heated the milk and the caramel together for 30 sec. To 1 min. It would pour over the holes better.

  89. Jeanette greenwood

    What is cool whip please

  90. Linda smith

I've made this recipe for years, but has anyone every made this and frozen it's?

    1. carol

Ive made this cake for several years now and its always a hit.. I use crushed butterfingers. My recipe is called Holy Cow Cake and after eating that first bite you definitely want to say Holy Cow thats good !!! lol

  91. Bob H.

    5

Let the cake cool before putting on the cool whip!

  92. Sally

In my area, we call this "Better Than Sex" Cake. Also, I use chocolate morsels. After the cake has baked for 10 minutes, I pull out the rack and sprinkle the chocolate morsels on top. Pop back in the oven and back according to box directions. I also use German Chocolate cake. Once out of the oven and while the cake is still warm, poke small holes all over the top (I used handle of wooden spoon). The slowly pour the evaporated milk over the top, filling the holes you've just made. Now let the cake cool. Add the caramel topping, cool. Then add the Cool-Whip. Sprinkle the crushed Heath bar over the cool-whip. Best cake ever!

  93. AMY

Do you have to leave this in the pan you cook it in? Or can you put it on a platter after you take it out of the oven before you poke your holes?

  94. Elizabeth S.

    5

I found a similiar recipe on Betty Crocker Recipes site. It sure does taste yummy!

  95. Paula

I use duncan hines dark chocolate fudge cake and I also use a jar of hot fudge sauce along with the caramel sauce. People eat it up!

  96. Judy

I made this cake gluten free by substituting the cake mix. I also had to find a caramel sauce that was gluten free. It was SO GOOD!!!! I love that it's not super sweet!!!

  97. Gertie Mae

    5

I made this cake over the holidays and EVERYONE LOVED it! It was super easy to make, cute and served really well, the whole presentation of it is fabulous. One of my favorite go to desserts now. Did I mention that it is absolutely easy and incredibly delicious? I want to call it magic cake though, the way the caramel and condensed milk absorb and distribute through the cake is just so decadent and fabulous...utterly in love with this cake!

  98. Eileen Ross

Cake needs to be cooled completely before topping with Cool Whip.

  99. Laura

    4

I made a few changes to the recipe.

    I used:
    2-9 in. round pans
2-small containers of cool whip OR just 1-large container of cool whip
    1-large container of caramel topping
1-large container of hot fudge topping
    1-bag of Heath candy pieces

I left the sweetened condensed milk out of my recipe.

I followed the recipe up to the point of filling the cake.
The changes I made are as follows:
    1) I mixed the caramel and hot fudge topping together and put it into the holes in the cakes. I used half for each cake.
    2) I topped both cakes with a small layer of Heath candy pieces.
    3) I mixed the rest of the Heath candy pieces with the whipped cream and spread it on top of both cakes.

In order to not have to wash a bunch of dishes I only used one mixing bowl, one mixing spoon, and I kept rinsing them off for every new thing that I wanted to do.

The cake tastes the best when you let it sit for 1-2 days so the flavors can meld together in the cake.

I went against my better judgment and followed the instructions exactly. What I wanted to do (and should have) was wait til the cake cooled before adding the whipped topping. Putting it on the warm cake made it melt some. I found I had to spread it quickly and get it into therefrigerator to stop the melting process. I'm sure it will be yummy regardless!

so sorry, I should clarify to let the cake cool before spreading on the cool whip. Thanks for bringing that to my attention :) I have edited the recipe to say so. I bet it would still taste yummy either way! I hope you liked it!

I make this same cake. I make a wet coconut cake like this. I use white cake mix sweetened condensed milk coconut cream milk cool whip coconut on top. And I put jelly beans on top for Easter.

I Love this cake, I make it at hoe and my Family just eats it up as soon as its ready. When we are done we put it in the refrigerator and eat it cold, that is my favorite way to eat it. The only thing I would possibly change is put 1/2 of a bag of Semi Sweet chocolate chips, and Dark chocolate chips instead of Heath Bars, OR you can Have both that is just as amazing.

I've been making this for years also, best cake ever! Mine is called turtle cake .. Not sure why and I use real whipped cream , the flavours really compliment each other.

The handle end of wooden spoons quite large? How far down do you poke the spoon? Is it all the way through?

Can I freeze this cake? I’d rather eat it all ? but am trying to be responsible! Haha

Borden makes a caramel flavored condensed milk. I use it instead of buying caramel. Taste just as good. Find it with the condensed milk.
