Nutella Rice Krispy Treats

Three words.

To. Die. For.

That is how I would describe this heavenly creation.  If you love Nutella, you have got to try out this recipe. You will be so happy you did!If you haven’t joined the Nutella band wagon, now would be the time to hop aboard.  Seriously.  You are missing out!  After you take your first spoonful, and decide you have an addiction, make these.

Let me tell you about how I first fell in love with Nutella. Before having kids, I hated grocery shopping.  It was something that I had to do.  Now, having two kids, I see it as something I get to do.  Let me explain.  I think every stay-at-home mom can agree, personal you time is crucial for your sanity.  So when the hubby is home, and after the kids go to bed, I just like to go out for a drive and spend some quality “me-time” even if it is just a drive.  Well, I started doing my grocery shopping at night, and it is wonderful.  The crowds are gone, it is silent, and I am by myself.  I now enjoy grocery shopping.  It was on one of these night grocery store outings after my first child was born that I stumbled upon Nutella.  I noticed it, never heard of it before,  and deiced “What the heck?! Its worth a shot!”  After my first spoonful, I have been hooked.

How did you first hear or taste Nutella?

Now lets combine our love for Nutella and our love for Rice Krispy Treats, and you get this wonderful masterpiece.

 DELICIOUS!

I got hooked on Nutella as a teenager when I visited my Dad who was stationed in Italy. Back then I never saw it in the states - my dad would send me a jar occasionally. As a young married I found it in stores like World Market, so it was a rare treat. It's been in my local grocery store for years, but only recently have I decided it's part of my daily diet - usually on my toast each morning. Thanks for sharing another tempting Nutella recipe!

  2. Mandy

I got hooked on Nutella after I made your Nutella cupcakes. I have been looking for more Nutella recipes ever since. Thank you for this recipe and some of your other Nutella recipes. I have made the Nutella bannana bread several times, it is one of my favorites! I will be making these for my adorable kids for an after school snack. You can see why my children adore me when I have great treats like these waiting for them after a long hard day at school. Thanks Nikki, keep them coming, I am your biggest fan!

  3. Scott

Would any substitution for the shortening work well?

    1. Queen Mommy

I've successfully substituted coconut oil (unrefined) for shortening in many recipes.

  4. Torie

I've still never had Nutella, but I feel like this would be a great recipe for an introduction to it!

    1. Val

      Torie,
IMO, the best introduction to Nutella has always been a large table spoonful! ...accompanied by fresh strawberries is nice too. ENJOY the initiation to this awesome addiction! :)

  5. Aimee

These look divine! I really got hooked to Nutella when I was on a study abroad in Vienna. Yum! lmld.org

  6. Whitney Leigh

I've been hooked on nutella ever since I went to the olympics in Italy in 06. We stocked up like it was the apacolypse before we left because we were afraid we would never see it again. Then just a few years later it made itself popular in the states and we can find it at walmart! yay!!

  7. Beth

I mean, anything Nutella = to die for. This looks DELISH! MMM!!!

  8. Anonymous

If there were not so many colories in them I would dive right in. But then I guess they are not gluten-free either.

    1. Stacie

I believe Rice Crispies ARE gluten free since they are rice not wheat.

    2. rosemary

for gluten free version, please make sure that the box of rice krispy cereal says "gluten free", some boxes do not say that.

    3. Clau

Unfortunately they are NOT gluten free. They contain Barley Malt (silly right?). However, after many complaints they (Kellogs) now have GF Rice Krispies!

  9. Kim - Liv Life

Yay!!! I'm so glad you liked these!!! We have obviously joined that Nutella Bandwagon as well and absolutely love the stuff too (though I still think good ole peanut butter would win out in a battle). These are one of my son's favorite treats, and you've reminded me I haven't made them for him in a while. Perhaps I'll surprise him tomorrow! Thanks for the shout out and for sharing the recipe!

  10. c.w.frosting

I love rice krispies... was just reminded how much when I had a few at a recent baby shower! Love nutella too. Pinning your recipe for future reference!-caroline @ c.w.frosting

These look fantastic but I really don't want to go out and buy a whole can of shortening just for a tablespoon. Does anyone have a substitute that can be used instead of shortening?

    1. anna

Skip the shortening and use Coconut Oil. Healthy and good for you.

  12. Anonymous

In Paris...we always found these small shops that sold crepes....our favorite was Nutella and bananas..after a while I found nutella in the store at home and went bananas......

  13. Tina @ Babycakes Blog

I love Nutella, I buy two jars of it at a time at Costco! I only recently started making Rice Krispie treats, for some reason I thought it would be a pain to stir the marshmallows into the cereal, but I was wrong it was really easy. Can't wait to try this!

  14. Anonymous

I think I am going to make this but without the topping. That way I don't have to worry about the shortening.

  15. Shiloh

Oh, my goodness, this looks SOO very good. Nutella is one of my favorites.

butter or margarine can be substituted for shortening.

  19. Annie

Kellogs makes gluten free brown rice Rice Krispies. I know many people who can't eat gluten who can eat Nutella. So you might be able to eat these gluten wise.

  20. Michelle

LOOOOOVVVVEEEE Nutella. My daughter is a huge fan of it too so I think I'll be pinning this...

  21. Devi McDonald

I've seen the Biscoff butter in the grocery store. But not quite sure how this product would taste in comparison to the cookies. Any insight on this? Thanks

  26. Anonymous

If you like Nutella, try Biscoff! ITs amazing! You can find it at Central Market.

  27. Ami w/AliLilly

OH SWEET HEAVEN!! Nutella, seriously is just....it's....there are no words! LOL I LOVE the stuff!! I MUST try this! I can't wait!!!!! YUM!!!

  28. Anonymous

I don't plan on it, but if i were incarcerated and on death row my last meal would be a giant jar of nutella, a great loaf of crusty Italian bread and ice cold milk. I am a first generation Italian-American and we always had nutella as kids. My mom bought it at Italian grocery stores or delis. We had to beg for peanut butter because other kids thought it was gross to eat bread and chocolate! Who's crazy now? I can't believe I married someone who hates it...guess I can have the whole tray of treats! Darn. : )

    1. Val

LOL, love your story...much like my own. :)

  29. Maria

Ok this sounds AMAZING!!!!!! Nutella. Rice Krispy Treats. I have to try this!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Ruth

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm they look yummy! Here in Europe nutella is kind of a kids staple so I gues I discovered it when I was a kid? But baking with it, only just discovering that! mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  31. Jes

Just made these and they're as fantastic as they sound and look! I pressed mine into a 9x13 for thinner ones and they were awesome =]

  32. lynn

Made these last night - Soo yummy but soooo rich - next time we would only make 1/2 of the topping... But there will be a next time! :)

  33. Deanna

I was introduced to Nutella as a small child... My Grandpa is from Germany and every year at Christmas he would bring my dad a whole bag of "treats" from Germany (well, from a store that sold treats from Germany) these really awesome cookies, and kahlua filled chocolates, and a bunch of other good stuff.... But my Favorite was nutella... I remember in highschool finding it at Kroger and thinking I died and went to heaven lol... totally making these, you can NEVER have enough Nutella...my fav is Nutella and PB on warm toast.. holy crap haha

  34. Anonymous

I found nutella while living in Seattle, and it was love....I use it for frosting on cupcakes, spread on slices of banana bread, and drop a large dollop into the bottom of my hot chocolate; I also spread it on a graham craker, spread marshmallow creme on another, put them together for faux s'mores. (And vegetarians can eat the faux s'mores because there is no gelatin in marshmallow creme.) And it's great straight from the jar...

  35. Alison

For those of you who are looking for a shortening sub- just use vegetable oil. If you melt the chocolate and nutella gently enough, you don't even need the oil. Nuke choc chips/nutella for no more than 30 seconds at a time, stirring in-between until smooth and melty. Personally, I think the topping is overkill in this recipe. The plain treats seem decadent enough!

  36. Anonymous

These are gluten free as long as you use gluten free rice krispies! TJs sells them!

  37. Anonymous

This recipe did not work at all. The nutella was difficult to work with and did not melt well. It basically turned into a hard ball when mixed with the marshmallow. Wouldn't make this again.

  38. Anonymous

Mine set up super hard and had to throw them out :(

  39. Anonymous

I'm one of the lucky ones who grew up on Nutella. This is absolutely wonderful. Thank you

  40. Kari Compton

I first had Nutella in my sophomore French Class in high school. My teacher always tried to introduce us to foreign cultures, and since none of us had ever heard of Nutella, he brought some in to try with bread. Since that day, there has always been a jar in my cupboard! I love dipping graham crackers and pretzels in it. Only recently have I found recipes for baking with it! :)

  41. Kris

I can't wait to make these! I plan to make these subbing coconut oil for the shortening. One quick question - is this for a 9x13 pan? 8x8? Maybe I missed that somewhere...

  42. Annie

Don't care about calories, don't care about gluten or oil. I am using the topping of this for German chocolate brownie cakes.. It seems like it would work perfectly. Thanks so much for sharing! I have loved Nutella since German class in high school. It seemed like such a fancy treat for us Americans. Glad it's mainstream now. I go thru over 2lbs a month with baking and eating. My Nutella baking is trial and error - thankfully GFS has 2 big containers for cheap.

  43. Val

As a first generation Italian-American, I looked forward to my Grandparents trip back to Italy every summer because they would take 'requests' on gifts to bring back. My siblings wanted soccer cleats, Italian leather shoes, gold jewelry....me? I wanted Nutella...as many jars as they could fit in their suitcase (ok, so the gold and leather were in there too, but Nutella was MANDATORY). I hoarded it since you couldn't get it stateside back then. When I spotted it in a Italian grocery one day I finally decided that I would share it with anyone who would try it...it was a great broken-heart healer for my friends and I, eaten with a spoon, naturally! lol! LOVE that someone has started creating recipes with it!! I'm hooked on the banana-nutella bread, and will try this one out, but my favorite will always be Nutella with fresh strawberries.

  44. Christine

I first heard of Nutella when our exchange student from Asiago Italy went grocery shopping with me. She wanted to see if we had any items from back home here in the States. She saw the Nutella and of course we had to buy some. It's wonderful on banana bread, waffles and pancakes. I am really anxious to try this recipe. Thanks!

  45. Screendoorgirl 3

I will pin these and try them, although I don't need any more reasons to eat Nutella. I first heard of it when watching the beautiful Giada DeLaurentiis on the Food Network. She uses it a lot. Thanks!

  46. Cindy {crazylou}

Thank you for this delicious recipe. I've had it saved for awhile now and just got around to making them! I put them in my neighbors Christmas goodie tins! I also featured it on my blog and included a link to your post!
    Happy Holidays!

Hazelnuts in any form have always been a favorite... out of the shell, in Baci chocolates, and Nutella. Sadly they now use artifical vanilla flavor in Nutella, so I buy Nocciolata which is all natural and delicious.

Any size pan will do, depending on how thick you like your bars. A 9x13 is typically called for.

  49. Spacey

I've tried these twice. Both times the marshmallow / Nutella mixture turns out hard, so the Rice Krispie part just crumbles. We end up eating the crumbled mixture over ice cream and the part that sticks to the top as bars. Anyone have a suggestion on how to make them more like Rice Krispie treats? I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I've melted over medium and over low heat....

    1. Bakerfeind

Hi there spacey, I had the same issue with my first batch.
I ended up doing those saucepan elements over boiling water with a bowl on top (a double boiler). I find it's not as harsh as a medium heat and won't burn your ingredients. Hope that helps.

  50. Kimberly Diehl

This was an amazing recipe, my whole family's bed them. But they got sooooo hard once refrigerated. Ok to leave out on the counter in a covered container? How do you keep them from getting so hard?

  51. Thuy

May I ask what is the purpose of using shortening?

    Thanks much!!!

  52. igna

hi, i'm interesting with this recipe, and i will try to make it tomorrow. What type of butter we should use, is it the salted one? thank you..

  53. Joanne

Please help....I've made these 3 times and every time they set up so hard, I can hardly bite through them. What am I doing wrong?

  54. sonya

Haha. I got hooked on nutella when I was a younger teenager. Id pretty much lived at my friend courtneys house, her mom was a HEALTH NUT! So the only sweets she had in her home was , nutella. I was in love ever since. Especially on waffles! Butter, peanut butter, nutella. Yum!

  55. Brenda McGee

Jif makes a great hazelnut spread too!

  56. Brenda mcGee

Joanne: you are cooking it too long.

  57. Kate

Thanks for this recipe! I was dreaming up something to make for a bake sale, and thought of nutella rice krispy treats. I thought, "surely, somebody smarter than me must have figured out how to do this already!"
This recipe was great-- though, I doubled it, and if I did it again, I would do it in two separate batches. I couldn't mix it fast enough and the marshmallow nutella mixture got pretty hard pretty quickly, and it was really tough to stir and mix. Also, these are chewier (tougher) than regular rice krispy treats. I wonder if a higher ratio of marshmallows would help with that. I'll definitely try this one again-- maybe with a few tweaks! PS- if you're like me, you're thinking, I just bought this whole jar of nutella, and I don't really want to use it ALL on this bake sale item... I want to have some left to eat off a spoon later. RESIST the urge people. Don't skimp on the nutella in this recipe. Make the topping. It makes the recipe.
    Thanks!

  58. Christine Ranu

Ridiculously delicious! Love the Nutella twist on an old favorite!

  59. lucius

nutella can't be melted. its such a terrible recipe. the marshmallow hardens when mixed with the butter and the failed melted nutella. impossible to mix into the rice krispies.

  60. Megan

    So disgusting just made it

  61. Jerome

Wow! Made this for a birthday party on Saturday. Everyone liked it. If shared this link to many others wanting the recipe.

  62. Diane Maskell

    what size pan?

  63. Megan

If I only have large marshmallows how many should I use?

  64. Lindsay

What is shortening in the UK? I would love to try this but not sure about the shortening. Sounds great though!

  65. Treeling

I don't see a number of servings or a pan size for these... any idea what those would be?

These are amazing!!!! Everyone loves it when I make them.. They remind me of a European candy bar.
