  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 Tablespoons sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 cups buttermilk
  • 4 Tablespoons butter melted

AMAZING Buttermilk Sryup

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, sift flour baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar together.
  • Add eggs, buttermilk and melted butter. Whisk until well combined.
  • Cook on skillet or griddle until golden brown on both sides.

To Make Sryup

  • Combine butter, sugar and buttermilk in a medium saucepan over medium heat until sugar completely dissolves. Then remove from heat and add baking soda and vanilla. Stir to combine. Syrup will foam up, but that is part of what makes it SO incredible. Don't be alarmed by that.

True that! those are the best pancakes in the world, and that syrup could cure many of the worlds diseases!

    1. Angela

What does the buttermilk syrup taste like??

  2. Rhonda

These look great! I guess I won't need to take the family to Ihop in the morning.

  3. Anonymous

These look fantastic and I have everything to make them NOW(!) but, how much is a cube of butter?

  4. TheBookGirl

I've certainly heard of buttermilk pancakes, but never buttermilk syrup. I bet that syrup would make any variety of pancakes taste yummy!

  5. Chef in Training

@Anonymous a cube is 1 stick or 1/2 cup. Thanks for bringing that to my attention, I will change it in the recipe! Thanks and have a Merry Christmas!

  6. mividaenundulce

This will be perfect for our Christmas breakfast, I just will add some fresh fruit.Oh...thanks for the explanation of a "cube of butter".Merry Christmas...!!!

  7. Michele

These look and sound amazing! Thanks for sharing.

  8. Stephanie

these were AMAZING. This was our Christmas morning breakfast and everyone enjoyed them. Will defintely keep this recipe for the future. Thanks for sharing.

  9. Pam

I made these for breakfast this morning, WOW!!! The syrup was to die for, I could drink it!!!

  10. Jess

    OMG! Those look amazing!

  11. Kristen

My pancakes were on the thinner side...are they supposed to be? Anyways, they were delicious and very moist. The syrup was sooo good.

  12. Kinsli

Oh my goodness. This is almost my exact pancake recipe, but I have never thought to put buttermilk syrup on them! You are basically my new favorite person.

  13. Anonymous

I have made these a couple times and both times the pancakes were super thin. Are they supposed to be thin or am I doing something wrong?

  14. The Allen Family

I just made these and mine were SUPER thin too. (And I know I followed the recipe exactly because I noticed the previous comments about them being thin and didn't want to mess it up.) The first time I poured them in, it was like a crepe. I just added some flour to thicken it up and there were still very thin and just tasted like thick crepes. Weird. And bummer!

    1. Tracy

Sounds like a whole lot of Buttermilk to per the amount of flour... I would cut down on the Buttermilk.

    2. Danielle

I made recipe exactly as is and they were perfect, not too thin at all. Maybe make sure you don't blend flour in too much, should be a bit lumpy still. This is not a puffy pancake recipe , usually buttermilk pancakes are a bit thinner and chewier.

  15. Michelle

Wowza! You aren't kidding about the deliciousness of that syrup and the pancakes were super moist. They don't puff up like some pancake recipes, it to be honest....this is how I like my pancakes. I always make thin pancakes and I even pat them down a little to knock the air out of them (but not with this recipe). I found your blog via pinterest and I was hoping you wouldn't mind if I shared your recipe on my blog? I will be linking back to you of course giving credit where credit is due. :) Have a good weekend.

I see the picture for the Best Pancakes Ever, when I click on it, up comes the Buttermilk Pancake with AMAZING Buttermilk Syrup recipe. Can this be fixed to see the Best Pancakes Ever recipe. :) :) :)

  17. April

I made these this morning. I like my pancakes thicker so I decreased the buttermilk by 1/2 cup. Also next time I will leave the baking soda out of the syrup. It went from a smooth syrup to being very foamy and there was a bitter aftertaste.

  18. Heather Harper

I have made these pancakes several times now and they are to die for. I made them today and tweaked the recipe a little to make it healthier. Whole wheat flour, coconut oil instead of butter. They turned out beautifully. This is the only pancake recipe I will use now. Thank you.

  19. Sarah Nuttall

Nikki, thank you for sharing your Grandma's awesome recipe! I can't wait to make the syrup today for my little girls party! It sounds awesome. I posted a link from my blog to yours! Thanks again!

  20. Ruth

I made these pancakes and the syrup today, based on your husband's favourites list. The pancakes were delicious, the syrup incredible, and the combination DIVINE. These were, by far and away, the best pancakes I've ever made. My whole family loved them. I will absolutely be making this again. Thanks for sharing the recipe. Having recently discovered your site, I'm looking forward to enjoying many more of your suggestions!

    Blessings,

    Ruth

  21. Jen H.

Syrup was AMAZING!!!! I agree with others though that there seems to be something wrong with the pancake recipe. Maybe too much buttermilk? I ended up adding quite a bit of flour to make it the normal pancake consistency. Thanks for the syrup recipe, though... very easy and sinfully delicious! :)

  22. Christine

I tried this recipe about a month ago and am now asked to make them every weekend by my husband. He isn't a big syrup fan which is great since it leaves more for me. Thank you for sharing this fantastic recipe.

  23. Jennifer

In the pancake recipe, you list "soda". Is that soda water or baking soda?

    1. Chef in Training

baking soda. Sorry about the confusion, I will go fix that :)

  24. April

Hi. WOW! I just made these this morning and I must say that syrup is on my short list of the best things I have ever put in my mouth! I'll agree the pancakes were a little thin, but it didn't bother me and is an easy fix if it had. I do have a question about the syrup though. Do the leftovers keep and for how long? I still have about a 1/2 cup left and not sure if I can just re-heat and use it later. If not then I'll probably half that next time, but man on man thanks so much for sharing that recipe. I don't think I'll ever eat maple syrup again! Your blog and recipes are fantastic!

  25. Amour and Apparel

I made these this morning and they were amazing. I don't think I will ever buy pancake mix again and the glaze is awesome!

  26. HappyMomma

Already put a request in to eat these in Heaven!! Amazing!

  27. Bettie

I made these for breakfast this morning(because it's spring break here) and they were a huge hit. 4/4 of us agree that this recipe is a keeper. Thanks for sharing such great recipes. I can't wait to try some of your dinner recipes. By the way, the syrup is absolutely delicious.

  28. Kim

Made these tonight, but only had about 3 1/4 C buttermilk. Even with the lessened amount, they were still on the flat side- but good. Recipe made 12 pancakes. Will have to try the syrup another time!

    1. Cindy

thanks for mentioning how many the recipe made!

  29. katie

That buttermilk syrup sounds AMAZING. Looking forward to giving it a try this weekend!

  30. Amber W.

I've been making this syrup for years, and it's even better if you add the baking soda while cooking, and let it cook on low for at least 10 minutes...it turns nice and thick and "caramely".
Make sure you stir often, though, because it will foam over! Yum! Can't wait to try it with your pancake recipe!

  31. Kelly

Just made these for dinner and they truly were amazing! A definite keeper!

Can you save the leftover syrup for later use? A few of my kids don't use syrup (crazy, I know!) so we have a bunch left over. Next time I will half the syrup portion of the recipe.

    1. Chef in Training

I am SO glad to hear you liked them. Yep, you can totally save the extra syrup for later. Just store in an air tight container in the fridge and heat up again when needed :)

  32. Deborah

I just made these.. They really are the best pancakes in the world. And you don't need to butter them...the syrup is buttery enough. I even froze the leftover and put the syrup in the refrigerator and ate them during the week.

  33. Sarah

Haven't bought a box of pancake mix since I found this recipe. It's my favorite hands down!

  34. Milissa

Saw this pin on Pinterest, had everything on had to try the syrup so we did. It's amazing!! Very buttery & tasty. :) I loved how it foamed up the consistency is nice.

  35. Kristin

I have a recipe for coconut syrup that is very similar the buttermilk syrup. Try coconut extract in place of the vanilla. It's amazing!

  36. kate

I just have to add another amazing comment to the list... I just finished these and I can now die a happy woman. Best pancakes of my life!

  37. Michelle

These are the best pancakes and syrup ever! The first time I made these, I used milk and plain Greek yogurt, since I was out of buttermilk. [For substitution: 1 cup of buttermilk = 2 tablespoons of milk mixed with enough plain Greek yogurt to yield 1 cup. (http://chemistry.about.com/od/foodscienceprojects/a/How-To-Make-Buttermilk.htm)] I also mixed the eggs by themselves until they formed soft peaks. The pancakes were thick and delicious! Days later, when I made the pancakes again, using buttermilk this time, they were much thinner. I actually prefer using the yogurt instead. They are perfect to us! My husband and I thank you so much for posting this delicious recipe!!

  38. patti m

We have used this recipe for a couple of years now...no more store bought for us!

  39. Frances

Can I use this batter in a waffle iron?

    1. Chef in Training

the batter is pretty thin so I would not recommend it. You could try adding a little more flour to thicken it up maybe?

  40. Cheyanne Dahili

My family and I love them, so easy and delish. We have made them our Sunday morning breakfast favorite. Thanks for sharing. :)

  41. Lucy Kellett

Wow. Thank you for this recipe, we can't believe we've only just discovered buttermilk syrup, delicious! Lucy

  42. Felicia Morehouse

I'm wondering how long the syrup will last, and if it can be frozen? Thanks!

  43. Victoria

I've tried A LOT pancake recipes and this is the best one ever! The syrup was amazing too!

  44. Lyn

    4

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these! Have made several times!! The only thing I change is I use 2 1/2 c. of buttermilk for the pancakes. They are so good!

  45. Ela

Hi Nikki, I made these pancakes for breakfast today and when I was mixing it, I realized that the buttermilk amount in the pancakes is just too much, is that the right amount??? I didn't put it all, I only added 2-1/2 cups, next time, I'll just add 2-1/4 cups. The pancakes are on the thin side, but it tastes very good especially with the buttermilk syrup. Thanks.

  46. Tammy

Just wanted to let you know - I was skeptical about the syrup, but it was very good. Even my SUPER PICKY eight year old liked it. She liked it so much, she requested it again a few days later.

You have no idea what a big deal that is.

    Thank you for sharing this.

  47. Pam

I don't usually go back and rate recipes.......but this one is PHENOMENAL!!!!! There are very picky eaters in my house and its hard to please everyone but EVERYBODY is raving about this one! Thanks so much for the recipe. It will be a signature pancake & syrup recipe in our house. I think I'm going to try this for French toast & waffles!

  48. Mary

My family has made this "syrup" for years to pour over angel food cake. Try that too you will love it. Also good on ice cream.

  49. Lauren

Oh no! There are no organic ingredients in this recipe and everything is so toxic. Always use 100% genuine organic Maple Syrup - Not only does it taste good, but it's healthy for you!

    1. Sonja

Lol. I enjoyed my "toxic" pancakes, thanks. If you truly wanted I am sure you could switch out ingredients easily.

  50. Deborah Jessey

I make these all the time. They are heaven on earth.

  51. Deborah Jessey

    5

Ooops. Forgot to rate the recipe. Also, this recipe makes a lot, but I just freeze most of them and eat them all week!

  52. Sonja

These were yummy for a cold and snowy Easter morning! They reminded me of my Oma's wonderful pancakes. Hubby said the syrup tasted like they were from a deluxe restaurant! They will be added to our weekend brunches. Thanks for sharing.

  53. jennifer

I made the Syrup for Easter brunch. It was AMAZING!!!!

  54. Terisa

Best pancakes and syrup I've ever had. Made it twice already last week. My kids loved it.

  55. Veronica

This syrup is one of the best I have ever made! It tastes like liquid honey butter! Yummy! Unfortunately, the pancakes were the flattest and most gooey pancakes I have ever made. I used all fresh ingredients. I might be at a lower elevation than the recipe was developed at, but I am not sure that adding more leavening or flour or taking liquid out would have solved the problem. I will stick with our favorite pancake recipe (from America's Test Kitchen) and incorporate this amazing syrup into my arsenal.

  56. Nadine da Silva

    5

AMAZING!!!!! And that sauce.. I'm thinking what else can I use it with!

  57. Alex

This sounds great! How many pancakes does this recipe make?

  58. Jessica

I made the pancakes and syrup this morning! Wow! Fantastic!

  59. Ya

Hi how much of buttermilk should i put since some say its very thin.

  60. Lori Duncan

I'm making these this weekend and was wondering how many pancakes it makes?
    They look so yummy!

  61. Jessica

    5

Oh wow! These are wonderful and the recipe is fine. If you let the pancake mix do its thing it is not too thin. Let it sit a couple of minutes after its been mixed and the baking soda will mix in wirth the buttermilk and cause it to bubble up fuller but dont over mix. Author may have already explained all of this but I just made them and I can only say incredible pancakes and the syrup was perfect, had no idea buttermilk could make a delicious syrup and I used honey instead of sugar and used half butter and lf coconut oil(non-coconut flavor)

    1. Angela

Thank you.. I've been looking through the responses for the reason the pancakes are thin. People are using more flour or less buttermilk. I will let it rest 15 minutes. Thanks again!

  62. Stef

These pancakes and the syrup are amazing! I have been searching for the best pancake recipe for years and have now found it! I can't stand pancakes that are like "cake" and crumble and absorb the syrup, only to taste like cake (if that makes sense!). Pancakes are best with some elasticity and these delivered. I have used the powdered buttermilk in past recipes that you add water to, but this time I used low fat buttermilk from Trader Joes dairy case and believe there is a difference. I halved the pancake recipe and it made about a dozen 4-5" size pancakes - perfect for 3-4 people. The syrup was so good, too! I made the full recipe of syrup. Thank you so much for this great recipe and I am looking forward to finding other good ones from your site!!!

I have been making this recipe for a few years now and it is our favorite pancake recipe. My boys love it and my hubby raves about the syrup. They are mouth watering perfection.

  64. Sondra

This is the glaze I put on my carrot cakes....I am certain it is MAGIC! Sooo yummy!

  65. sandra kelly

Sounds yummy, can you use powered buttermilk if you do not have fresh ?

  66. Isabel seth

Hi I never have any joy making pancakes as I just never get them right ?. I'm going to try these tho, they look amazing! Is it OK to make in a frying pan and if so should I put any butter in the pan and is it plain flour or self raising that you use. Thanx

  67. Aaron

My daughter is Type 1 D. She would love this as a treat every now and again. Do you have the carb count? She is so good with everything else she eats and can rarely enjoy what a normal child can have so this would make her so happy. Thx!

  68. Charles Mallory

These are not thin. Use real thick cultured buttermilk, not soured milk. And these are the best these are Disneyland worthy.

I am a huge fan of pancakes and could eat them three times a day. I have to say I have made these six times...I can't stop eating them, I love to add blueberries too.. Since I am only one individual eating them I find the batter keeps for days in the refrigerator. I actually store it in a glass jar and shake it prior to pouring in the pan. No need to further add more buttermilk to the mixture as it doesn't get thicker, with age. I encourage you to try them my ONLY pancake recipe I make now.

Note I keep powered buttermilk on hand easy to make and taste great!

  70. Carla

This was the best and the syrup only made it that much better, congrats on a wonderful recipe.

  71. Casey

    5

These were a hit in my house! Thanks to you!! I do want to ask about storing the syrup if we don’t finish it all. Any recommendations on that?

  72. Karen S.

    5

These are not subtle pancakes.....very flavorful....all the ingredients in just the right balance. Especially when topped with the syrup. I bypassed any additional butter on top of the pancake....not needed. I thought the syrup would be “too much” but it is very addicting. Yeah.

  73. steve cox

I've made a lot of flapjacks in my day....but this rates up there with some of the best. The syrup is the star of this recipe. Best when prepared on a flat top grill.
