Philly Cheese Steak Dip

Dip and appetizer season is among us and I couldn’t be more happy about that! They are both mine and my hubby’s favorite thing to chow down on. My husband particularly loves a good dip recipe and today’s recipe is just that!

I was on my way to bed one night when this idea hit me and I couldn’t wait to share it with you! I honestly feel like I think of food all day because of this blog but of course night time, while I am lying in bed wishing I could be eating, is when the best ideas come to me ;)

Nikki, this dip looks amazing and sounds delicious! I plan to make it for Superbowl Sunday and am sure that it's going to be devoured by everyone!

One question though — you have onions listed on the ingredients list twice (2 tablespoons onion and 1 cup diced onion) but only once in the assembly of the dish. Is it 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sauteed or am I an idiot today and missing something?

    Thanks so much!

    1. Chef in Training

so sorry about that, it is supposed to be 2 Tablespoons olive oil, not onion. That was a typo. Thanks for catching that :)

    2. Dena

You're welcome and thanks for the clarification. Can't wait to make this and about 6,259 other dips and things on your website, LOL.

Best wishes for a safe and Happy New Year to you and yours!

  2. Stephanie

You don't mention cooking the steak before mixing it into the dip...do we mix it in raw, then it cooks when you bake it?

    1. Chef in Training

the ingredients say grilled steak cut into small pieces. SO sorry for any confusion. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

  3. Steve

do you cook meat or does it cook when baking dish thanks

    1. Chef in Training

yes the ingredients say to use grilled steak and cut it into small pieces. so sorry for any confusion, please let me know if you have any more questions

  4. Keith

So, you'll probably really be able to tell that I'm "in training" by my question. But, here it goes. Should the steak be cooked before I add it to the mix or will it cook when I bake the whole thing?

    1. Chef in Training

yes the ingredients say grilled steak cut into small pieces. Hope that helps and so sorry for the confusion :)

  5. lisa

Are u suppose to cook the steak or does it cook in the oven

    1. Chef in Training

it says grilled :) You grill it before hand and then chop it up into small pieces. So sorry for the confusion

  6. Nora

I'm going to try and make this for a party on Fri. How big a dish did you bake this in? I need enough for about 8 people. Thx!

  7. Harley

Curious about the onions/peppers. I'm intolerant to one and allergic to the other. Could I possibly replace one or both with say... garlic and mushrooms? Or maybe just not put them in at all?

    1. Reen

Oooh, I don't see why not! That sounds really good. Love me a mushroom cheesesteak :)

  8. amanda

I'm going to used steaks see how it works

This recipe / dip is the bomb dot com...I LOVE IT! Just wanted to let you know....even though you already know. Lol. Thanks for sharing!! :-) *goes back to eating dip*

  10. Heather

can you put this in a crockpot? Sounds sooo good!

  11. molly

What kind of baking dish doI use? Can't put my mixing bowl in the oven. And can I cook it in the crock pot??

  12. Laura

Could you make this in a crock pot???

  13. Lori Bemis

I can not wait to try this! I also see you are very good at answering peoples question's, in a timely manner :)

  14. J. Stefanac

Any suggestions on what sized dish to bake in? Thanks.

  15. Kit

What is shoulder steak, or what is comparable? Sirloin, t-bone, strip? I'm confused. Hoping to clarify so I can make this, it looks delicious!!!

  16. Joyce

    Yummmmm!!!

  17. Liz

It can't taste like a real Cheesesteak if you add green peppers. No one in Philly adds green peppers or mushrooms to a Cheesteak. Hot peppers and fried onions, yes.

    1. Barbara

Philly cheese steaks don't have green peppers but we do have mushroom cheese steaks and the steak is minute steak not grilled but cooked in a pan. Hard is explain just come to Philly for a real one. Lol. I'm definitely going to try this with some adjustments. Fry the onions and streak together. Season with pepper (cheese has enough salt) I'm going to use cream cheese, American and provolone cheeses and a table spoon or two of Marie's garlic dressing .

    2. Colleen

Philly native here - born and raised a block from Pat's and Geno's (at which no real Philadelphian would ever be seen, but I digress...) and I agree 100% with Liz. No green peppers, no mushrooms unless you absolutely must have them. Steak is thin-sliced ribeye cooked on a well-seasoned flat-top grill, and served either "wit" or "witout" fried onions. And no garlic!

That being said, I kind of like the addition of green peppers here - seems like it'll cut down on the heaviness of the meat and all that cheese. Just don't call it "Philly" cheesesteak dip! :-)

    3. Megan

I'm sure I'm bring completely stupid (so forgive me in advance), but do you think left over prime rib would work if I cut it up small and cook it like you are talking about? This seems like a very yummy way to use up our leftovers, but I'm not from Philly. ?

    4. Marla

I agree! I never understood green peppers on a cheesesteak in commercials etc. I bet it would be good with a little sweet or hot peppers cooked into it. I personally love my cheesesteaks with mushrooms, fried onions and sweet peppers cooked into it. I think maybe try to add a little american cheese too. Just to be authentic. BUT this dip sounds delicious and I will be making it for superbowl sunday.

  18. Eileen

Is there something that can br substituted for mayonnaise?

    1. Amie

Greek yogurt... use plain. I use in dips and cheeseballs all the time.

  19. Eileen

Is there something that can be used in place of mayonnaise?

  20. Johnetta Proctor

Your recipe sounds great (and I just printed it) but I'm not certain I understand about the beef.
Did you mean thin shoulder steak chopped into small pieces? I have never bought that cut of beef so I'm unfamiliar with it. Thank you for responding; I'd really like to try the recipe!

    1. JoRose

You want to use Steak-umm beef. Comes frozen, paper-thin, you can break it up as you put it in the frying pan. Super EASY!

  21. Laura

This would be YUM stuffed in a baked potato!

love to cook as well this will be made for super bowl thanks for this recipe

  23. Shannon

I am curious if you could use chipped beef for this recipe? I am just trying to simplify to whip together. And I like another suggestion to use mushrooms. I will probably saute mine first and onions too, and omit the green pepper.

    1. Merry

      4

I used chipped beef and it was fine.

    2. Merry

I should add that I'm from Philadelphia, if that matters to you. So, I know cheesesteaks. :)

    3. Lisa

      Yes, you should use Steakums!

  24. Elisa

Can we put this in a crock pot? I have a dinner coming up at work and would love to try this out there.

  25. Karen

What size serving dish do you use?

  26. greg hoovler

The recipe looks amazing. And it seems to me that you clearly state "GRILLED" steak, so what is everyone's problem. everyone should read it carefully before running to their computer and posting..

  27. Amy Jensen

Just made this dip for the super bowl - it's not going last until half time! AMAZING!! I didn't have enough provolone - so I added in mozzarella. It's good with tortilla chips, bagel chips and toasted bagels. Thanks so much for sharing this!!!

  28. Karen

can this be made ahead of time and reheated in the microwave or can this be made in a crockpot???? settings and time if so????

  29. Jill

What is thin cut shoulder steak...never heard of this cut of beef.

  30. Kallie

Instead of baking, do you think this could be put in a crockpot? Or after baking?

  31. Gloria c

For those having trouble finding Shoulder Steak, many stores call it London Broil instead. It is the same cut of beef.

  32. Shep

Philly Cheese steaks are made with white american cheese (sometimes cheese whiz) not provolone cheese. Just sayin'

  33. Drew

Chuck steak people. Shoulder = chuck = London broil. If you don't know a quick Google will clear it up. Also, did no one read the recipe? It says "grilled." Typically steak gets cooked when you grill it. For those asking if you can put it in a crock, sure, why not? All you are doing is heating it all up and melting cheese. You aren't actually cooking anything. The ignorance and lack of ability to use the brain God gave you to stop think a little bit is mind boggling

    1. Mimster

OMG! AMEN to these comments! I was exhausted reading all the comments that asked the same questions ...without having read any replies too....sheesh people.

At any rate I am psyched to try this for a family get together for Christmas...with a few Philly tweaks ;)

  34. Steve

I'm sure this sounds sacrilegious, but I wonder if you could use steakums for the steak? I would imagine because they are so thin you could cut them up while frozen, and just jump right to the baking step. Would save some time.

    1. Lisa

      Yes, you should use Steakums!

    2. LuvUBear

Steakums are what a Philly Cheesesteak is made with so yes. I wouldn't use anything else. Yum

    3. JT

Philly cheesesteaks are made from fresh Ribeye steak not steak-ums

  35. Alicia

Can I use hamburger in this instead of steak?

  36. Robin Kegelmayer

You forgot the mushrooms! Saute with the onions & green peppers!

  37. Jean Bennett

Shouldn't the beef be cooked prior to adding it to the cream cheese mixture?

    1. Chef in Training

yes it says "GRILLED" steak in the recipe :) So it is cooked prior to putting it in the cream cheese mixture. Sorry if there was any confusion and hope this was able to help clarify :)

  38. Mom of 4 boys

Absolutely wonderful dip, i put in a crock pot until melted and heated through....used tostitos scoops.....yummy....It's definitely a keeper...

  39. jill

What can you use in place of mayonaise thanks

Not sure where you had a Philly Cheesesteak before, but provalone is not the cheese used on this beloved sanwhich nor should it be used in the dip if you want authentic flavor. This dip should be made with Velveeta. I know it is not the most elegant cheese, but this is suppose to be modeled after Gino's or Pat's steaks, the ones who made the Philly cheesesteak famous. They actually use Cheese Wiz on their steaks and no other cheese!

  41. Lisa

Ooops forgot to mention that Steak Ums are actually what you should use along with the Velveeta cheese. The above is like a strange gormet version of a cheesesteak and would never be found in an authentic Cheesesteak shop in Philly.

  44. Kimberly

My cousin make this dip for a football game and the dip was wonderful, but the next day when we try to heat it up it was so oily. What cause the left over dip to be so oily?

  45. Sandy

I made this to a get together party and everyone loved it. Thank you so much for sharing!

  46. Holly

The onions/green peppers aren't sauteed before, right?

Hi! This sounds amazing! Am i able to make this over night and then warm it up the next day? Will it be fine?

    Thanks!

  48. Debbie

OMG people! A recipe is a guideline....if you don’t like green peppers, don’t use them. Use the flavors you like. Be creative! The more important thing is to keep the ingredient ratios in place.

  49. Laura

I'm sure many people have found this recipe to make for the Super Bowl this year (me included) and to all the picky naysayers I say... Get over it. I'm from Philly and provolone, white american or whiz are all acceptable options. I prefer american, because that's how my corner pizza shop makes them, but that doesn't make my steak any more or less authentic. Would I tradionally put mushrooms or peppers on my steak? No. But this is a dip! Put whatever you want in it! I thought the peppers were a great, colorful addition. Great recipe. Anyone who complains about the ingredients should consider that this is a dip, not a sandwich! Geez!

How many servings would this be?

We are making this dip for our CHIEFS game!!! I cooked onions and steak in cast iron and put it all together and baked in cast iron. It is delicious!!!!
