My mom has been making her famous Mac and Cheese recipe since before I can remember and I promise you… with neighbors, her church, our extended relatives… this is her number 1 most requested side dish. Ever!

Everyone raves how it is the best mac and cheese they have EVER had! I agree. My family gobbles up this stuff.

Now, I should preface, this recipe has Velveeta and I know some of you are huge fans. I typically am not, however, I have not been able to find a suitable replacement and still get the same consistency, flavor and texture. So if you are up for the challenge and try a substitute with great results, come back and let me know!

Until then, I eat this recipe as is. It is the only recipe I use Velveeta in personally, as I have found other cheeses to work.

Now off that note,

It is as good as it looks. I only cook for 2people so the sauce makes enough for 2 dinners worth Mac&Cheese.

This truly is a great mac and cheese recipe! I cook for a living so I am very familiar with a lot of mac and cheese recipes and I have to say every time I make this it gets rave reviews. It is not particularly difficult to make and once you try it you'll never buy the boxed stuff again. I have made a number of chef in training recipes and have not had a bad one yet. Thank you for sharing your family's recipes. You may consider yourself in training but your recipes are spot-on. I will be a follower for a long time.

I made this for a wedding and it was so good, I made it again for my family! I have made other mac and cheese recipes, but none quite as good as this. I will be making this again. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Do you think this would be okay to make ahead of time and then bake the next day?

How many servings is this do you think? I need to make about 5lbs-ish and am wondering how to adjust.... Thanks!

my mac-cheese always includes onions and either bell peppers or a spicier pepper,
like jalapenia. I've used different cheeses, and have found a mix of cheeses works best for me

This recipe is so good! I followed all the steps, but mines was a bit thick. Is there a way to thin it out?

    1. Chef in Training

Yes, if the sauce is looking too thick, add some milk, a little at a time, to thin it :) Hope that helps!

When do you add the salt and pepper and does it have to be white pepper?

    Hello!
Could I make this ahead of time, put it in the fridge, and wait to bake it later in the day? It looks delicious :) Thank you!

I made this last night and it was amazing! I didn't have velveeta on hand, so I used 1 can of cheese soup instead and added some dried mustard and garlic powder as well. The consistency turned out great and even my son ate it, and he hates mac n' cheese (I know weird) and never likes my cooking.

If I don't have Velveeta in my country, what cheese can I use instead??

  18. Melissa

I'd like to make this as part of a meal for a new mom. Have you ever made this ahead of time?

Tried for the first time, my son is a 15yr old who's favorite dish is Mac'N Cheese so I have done many things over the years with velveta boxed mac'n cheese. So we decided to use that instead because it was a spur of the moment thing but followed the rest added a bit of salt and garlic salt and it turned out yummy. I am not a big fan of macaroni and cheese but this was really delist! Thank you for the recipe

This recipe is a hit in my house! This is in my oven now and my husband had burnt himself twice trying to taste it! He has already deemed this as the best mac n cheese recipe ever and told me I “need to save this recipe now!” Thanks so much!,

I made this for my really picky eater and cheese lover husband. Thank goodness we had the grandkids over or he would have eaten the entire dish. Super easy dish and it was a hit putting it mildly. I did add more cheese and cut the milk to 2 and 1/2 cups(my husband doesn't care for thin cheese sauce, sorry). I also added 1/4 cup of soir cream. It turned out delicious. Thank you for a great recipe!!!

Its been awhile since I have made this recipe. This time I added a shot of Makers Mark bourbon and some peppered bacon from this morning... The Bourbon added a little smokey Bourbon flavor and the Bacon, is well Bacon... I have tried several of the worlds best Mac and Cheese.... This 1 wins hands down in my Book...
