Homemade Magic Shell
Magic Shell has been one of my favorite ice cream toppings since I was a little girl. I was so fascinated watching it go from one of most runny chocolate sauces I had ever seen to a hard beautifully smooth shell.
What is not to love about it?!
Who knew that this glorious topping was a simple TWO ingredients?! Not me, but now I am SO glad I do!
I found this recipe at The Comfort of Cooking and now have not been able to part with it. It is amazing and tastes and acts just like the Magic Shell you can buy at the store, only now you know exactly what is going into it and its made in the comfort of your own home.
It is ridiculously simple and tastes great! My kids get the biggest kick out of watching it harden up and cutting through the crisp smooth shell.
Whatever you do, DO NOT put store this in the fridge. What does this stuff do when cold… shell up. That’s right. It will never be the same.
This is stored at room temperature in an airtight container, like a mason jar or something of the like :)
- 2 cups milk chocolate chips, or semi-sweet
- ¼ cup coconut oil, I used the solid kind
- Combine the chocolate chips and coconut oil together in a medium microwave safe bowl. Heat in 30 second increments, stirring in between each increment until chocolate chips are melted and stirred smooth.
- Pour and drizzle over ice cream. Store remaining left overs in an air tight container at ROOM TEMPERATURE :)
Enjoy!

You have no idea how happy I am about this!!! Eek! I can't wait to try it tonight! I just bought the store stuff last week and feel terrible every time I use it because of everything that's in it. Do you think I could mix in peanutbutter to your recipe? The Reese's one is my favorite. If you think I could, how much would you add?

You can actually buy refined coconut oil which does not have the strong smell and taste.

i love this recipe!! I have a quick question are for you. How long does it last in a jar at room temperature? I'm wondering if I make a jar full will it last a few weeks?
Looking forward to your reply..

This sounds great & will make it.

Do you have to use coconut oil? Can you use vegetable oil instead? We are not a fan of coconuts. Thanks for responding. ~ Kim

You can also make peanut butter shell using natural style peanut butter and coconut oil in about the same quantities. It is so yummy!

Does it ever go slightly solid? My solid coconut oil and chocolate chips always harden after a while, even room temp. Before use, would you need to slightly microwave to make it smooth again?

Any substitution ideas when there is a coconut allergy in family?
Marion
Do you think this would work with dark chocolate morsels?

I do this with my different flavoured chocolate powders as well, it is so easy and tastes great!
Corinne
yum! I've done this before but just single servings...I didn't think of making extra to store! It's also good with peanut butter in place or or in addition to the chocolate :) yum!

I think I may give this one a try . . . but add MINT Flavoring ? ?

How long will it keep? And do you occasionally have to heat it up a little and remix it?
Katrina
You can actually make this with ANY flavor chips or candy melts colors/flavors I've done it and it tastes great!!!
Molly
So delicious! No chemicals!

I made this and it worked incredibly well! My only concern is how long it will last when stored in an airtight conainer at room temperature?
