Chocolate Chip Orange Cookies

I am so excited to have Dorothy from Crazy For Crust visiting the blog today. Her blog is filled with sweets of all kinds and they all look and sound so wonderful. Today she is sharing a recipe that I can’t wait to get baking in my own kitchen. I will let her take it away from here :)

Chocolate Chip Orange Cookies from crazyforcrust.com guest post for Chef in Training.... These sound like a fantastic combo of flavors!

Hi everyone! I’m Dorothy from Crazy for Crust, where I bake up all sorts of sugary things and tempt you with them, along with a slice of my life.

I’m so excited that Nikki asked me to be here today! I absolutely love Chef-in-Training. I mean, Nikki introduced me to pudding cookies, which kind of changed my life! And I’ve made her BBQ Beef Pie Pockets so many times – they’re a family favorite!

Now, if you know me at all, you know I love me some pie. Really, I love me some crust. If I can give it a crust, I will. However…sometimes you just feel like a chocolate chip cookie. Am I right?

Awhile ago, my daughter asked me to make cookies. Basic chocolate chip. Plain old regular cookies.

Once I finished gaping at her with an astonished look on my face, I realized it had been over a year since I made “regular” anything. The kid couldn’t even remember MY chocolate chip cookies – the recipe I loved and made a gazillion times…before I was a blogger. So I made her some cookies. Regular old chocolate chip ones. But…I am me. So I added orange to the batter. Because, as try as I might, I can’t just do “regular”!

This recipe is my favorite chocolate cookie recipe. It was originally (I think) from all recipes and I’ve changed it so many times it no longer looks like the tattered printout in my binder. There are two important things about this recipe:

1. You start with melted butter. I know, so many people say not too. It makes a flatter cookie, the dough isn’t puffy, whatever. It’s good when you start with melted! This recipe has both brown and white sugar in it and when you mix the sugars with the melted butter it creates a toffee-like flavor. I’ve actually had people ask if there is toffee in the cookies. Nope – just melted butter!

2. You MUST chill the dough. I know, it’s hard. Try not to eat it all while sneaking to the fridge during chilling. Because the butter starts out melted, you have to chill it, otherwise it will spread too much. 30 minutes is okay in a pinch but and hour (or two) is better.

I love orange and chocolate together, and these cookies have a little hint of orange from the juice and zest. It’s like “hmmm…what’s that flavor??? Orange!” when you’re eating them. So. Absolutely. Good.

I hope you enjoyed this recipe today! I want to thank Nikki for having me. And, if you get a chance, come stop by Crazy for Crust sometime. I’ll overfeed you sugar and make you laugh. I promise!

Chocolate Chip Orange Cookies

2 sticks butter
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup light brown sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
2 teaspoons fresh orange juice
1 tablespoon orange zest
3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

  1. Melt butter in a microwave safe bowl. Pour into an electric mixer fitted with paddle attachment. While still hot, add both sugars and mix on low until combined. Let sit to cool for a few minutes.
  2. While butter mixture is cooling, combine flour, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Stir and set aside.
  3. Turn mixer (with butter mixture bowl attached) on low. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing completely. Mix in vanilla extract and orange juice. Add flour mixture to the wet ingredients and mix until combined. Stir in chocolate chips.
  4. Chill for at least 30 minutes, but preferably an hour or more. To speed up the process, you can scoop the cookie dough (step 5) onto the cookie sheets and chill the dough that way. It will chill faster!
  5. Preheat oven to 350°. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto parchment lined cookie sheets. Bake for 10-11 minutes (depending on size). Cookies made from my 2-tablespoon cookie scoop baked in 11 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes, and then remove from pans to cool completely.

Yield: 3 dozen cookies

Dorothy they look wonderful! The fact that they're your FAVE says a lot! And that you start with melted butter. Such a time saver when you don't have to cream ingredients. Toffee-like flavor - I'm on board!

  2. Tieghan

Orange cookies! Wow, those sound pretty different, but stil delicious! Great post Dorothy! I was so excited to read your guest post today. Awesome job both Nikki and Dorothy!

  3. Danielle

coooookies! For a second there, I almost thought I could smell them (wishful thinking). They look delicious. And I love the idea of melting the butter :)

  4. Jess

    Holy deliciousness! Pinned! :)

  5. Joy

Dumb question, but what are you supposed to do with the 1 TBL orange zest listed in the ingredients? I've read the recipe several times and don't see where it's actually used in the process.

  6. Carmen

This looks wonderful. I have one question, how many grams are two sticks of butter? Sorry, I'm in Spain and we don't use this kind of mesaurement here. Thanks a lot. Cheers!

    1. Chef in Training

I am not sure on grams, but 2 sticks of butter is equivalent to 1 cup of butter. Sorry about that confusion.

    2. Carmen

      Great. Thanks a lot!

Dorothy, isn't it funny how we can get so caught up in creating new culinary wonders that we can forget to remake the tried and true favorites?! :) I recently had a request from my son for his favorite m&m cookies and, like you, realized that I hadn't made them in over a year! I love the tweak you made to your chocolate chip cookies. Citrus and chocolate is a delicious combo. I hope your daughter loved her cookies. :)

  8. Renee @ Awesome on $20

I love the chocolate and orange combo, and my favorite chocolate chip cookies are made with melted butter, too. And a fat pinch of salt. I'm a big fan of plain, but I love a surprise as well. I can't wait to try these.

  9. Joy @ Baking-Joy

These look wonderful Dorothy! I've recently hit the jackpot with my cookie recipe & it starts with melted butter! :-)

  10. The Better Baker

What an ORANGE-eously awesome cookie combo! ;-} Can't wait to make them. Thanks to both of you for sharing!

  11. Julia

Hello, delicious! I recently enjoyed some scrumptious chocolate orange muffins. These cookies look just as crave-worthy!

  12. Debbie

Hello! We just made some of your Chocolate Chip Orange cookies to send to my soldier son who loves those flavors mixed... Your recipe is PERFECT. The texture is amazing and chewy and fluffy. My daughter wanted me to let you know that in the instruction part you forgot to have her add the orange peel.... Thanks for sharing such a great recipe. We can't wait to try another one of yours.

  13. Amy

I've made these cookies twice now and they have been a major hit! Good combo of fresh citrus and chocolate. And Joy, you are not crazy about missing the "zest" step, I just added it in with the eggs. I also melted only one stick of butter and left the other at room temp, and both batches came out very fluffy! Love this recipe!

  14. NataLee

Been on a quest for years now for the best chocolate chip cookie recipe and yours wins! Yummy! I made it without the zest, but I'll definitely give it a whirl with next time. Also, I did 1 1/2 Tablespoon of OJ. Perfection. Thanks!

My cookie dough is in the fridge right now, it's been chilling for almost an hour now, but I decided I would make the cookies tomorrow instead. Will the cookies still be delicious sitting in the fridge for at least 18 hours? Should I just let the batter sit out for a good 10-15 minutes before baking them?
