  2. Mir

These cookies look incredible. I want that cookbook now!

  3. Heather

Delicious! I make a version of these cookies too. They are my "santa" cookies (I leave them for santa on Christmas), but I'm excited to try them with cream cheese! I am new to the food blogging world but I love following you! I love the range of recipes and they're always crowd pleasers! If you have any tips for a new blogger I'm all ears!

    Thanks,

    Heather

  4. Deborah

Maybe I missed it but how many cookies does this recipe make?

    1. Eddee

Taste and Tell’s, blog which this was created from , states 2 dozen, but that recipe also uses a cake mix -

  6. Dragonfly

how many cookies does this make?

  7. Jayme

Curious - will these red velvet cookies last if they are shipped across country in a care package? ~1-week in air-tight container.

  8. Sabrina

  9. Patty

I made these yesterday and was very disappointed. I've made a lot of cookies before and I followed the recipe to the T except that I couldn't cook them the day I made the dough so it was in the fridge for over 24 hours. Also when I copied this recipe with my Evernote it did not include an egg but from the directions I assumed it needed an egg. I know see that you added it to the ingredients.

These came out horrible. They didn't spread open. They stayed like a hard ball. The cookie tasted more like bread dough rather than the moist cake like cookies in your pictures. I was making these for a Cookie Exchange party this weekend and though I would have loved to bring these I don't think I can chance trying these out again. I don't have the time to waste.

Maybe it was my fault for leaving it in the fridge so long but I've never had this problem with any other cookies. But then again I don't usually make cookies with cream cheese. I'll have to try these again some other time.

    1. Lisa

I was also disappointed in these cookies. They looked beautiful and they were soft an chewy but they did not taste like Red Velvet cookies......the ratio cocoa to flour ratio is way off. If you want these to taste like Red Velvet you'll need to add quite a bit more cocoa. I was making these as gifts and had to scrap the batch (my kids actually will eat them) and start over. I am going to use this recipe but am going to use more cocoa based on another recipe I found.

I also made these cookies and was quite disappointed they spread out and was no taste to them, and when cooled they were paper thin crisps only

    3. Chef in Training

I'm not sure what went wrong and I apologize for that. Mine were puffy and very soft. If I think of anything I will let you know. So sorry about your experience.

  11. Lieu

Thank you for this recipe! I made them today for a Cookie Exchange and they were delicious. I only used 1 tsp of red food coloring and did not have to refrigerate the 2 hrs...only 30 minutes. I rolled them into 1" size balls and it came out to 5 dozen. The cookies were smaller than I thought they would be so I think I will roll them a bit larger next time.

  12. Marthamarthaa

how many cookies does this make?

  13. Danielle

I bake a lot and like to try different recipes. I was really not happy with these... I would never make again.

Made these cookies last night. Followed the recipe to a T, and have to say this is one of the worst tasting cookies I've ever had. The ratios for ingredients must be off. They taste like flour, that is it. I did not taste any sugar, cocoa powder, or butter. They did look just as pretty as the picture, but the taste was so bad I am not even comfortable sitting them out for guests. Will have to throw them away. Waste of many ingredients.

    1. Susan iovino

My recipe shows sugar, cocoa powder and butter.

  15. Caroline

Great idea, but it simply didn't turn out. They look great, but I agree they taste more like bread. Certainly there was no red velvet taste. Their texture was rather odd, excessively chewy, but that wasn't bad, just odd. If a flavor had been present, the texture wouldn't have reall mattered. However, these do look absolutely lovely. I had a wide variety of reactions from pleasant to tasteless to delicious.

I strictly followed the recepie, the only thing I did was vary cooking temperature for each batch from12 to -16 minutes. It didn't seem to affect the cookie though.

  16. Chrissy

Like many other posts, I agree that these cookies just didn't have any sort of red velvet taste. I had to keep increasing the cooking time as they came out practically raw in the middle even after 15 minutes. Followed the recipe to a T and just didn't work.
I will say they look beautiful right out of the oven and then deflate to a thin, mushy mess.

  17. Melissa

I wish I had read the comments before I attempted this recipe. I too was horribly disappointed. The ratio of dry to wet ingredients is off, cookie texture is similar to bread, and cookies lack the "red velvet" flavor I was looking forward too. I recommend removing and retooling this recipe from your site before anyone else wastes their time and money on this. It also speaks poorly for cookbook sales, if this is the type of recipe one would expect to find in there. Will not be trying this recipe or any other from this site. Such a shame.

  18. Frecklebliss

I was so exited to make these for my Christmas Eve spread. Very disappointing. They tasted very doughy and no matter how long I left them in the oven they still remained raw in the middle.

  19. Mary

I was excited to try this new recipe and really like the look of them. I followed the recipe EXACTLY and when the cookies came out of the oven, they did not spread out but stayed in balls. I used my spatula to flatten them somewhat and while they cooled, I was still pleased with how they looked. They taste like nothing! I'm guessing from other posts, the recipe does need more cocoa powder because they just tasted like dough. My husband (who wants to fix everything) is trying to think of some way he might inject the cookies with some flavoring. Very disappointed. I won't be making again. ;-(

  21. Nia

Just made these cookies, should not have made a double batch. Lacked flavor. These were not enjoyed by any of my testers :( *searching for another cookie to make for Christmas.

  22. Heather

I also was disappointed in the turnout. It looked great but it tasted like dough. No flavor at all. Was so looking forward to these.

  23. Ashley

I'm making these for my family's Christmas Eve get together tomorrow night. Excited, I love everything red velvet.

  24. MiChelle

I was so disappointed with these!!! I made them for a cookie exchange and they did not turn out. The dough was unbelievably sticky. They look like the picture but do not taste good!! It tastes more like bread dough with a hint of cocoa definitely not red velvet. This recipe needs to be changed.

  25. Brittany Boss

These cookies did not turn out as i hoped. They had no flavor at all. I looked over all of the ingredients and the directions after I made these and I made the cookies just like the recipe said. Very Dissappointed.

They are the nastiest things I've ever tasted!

  27. Sarah

Found this recipe on Pinterest and decided to give it a shot after giving the comments on this page a read-through, and wanted to weigh in on our results. We adjusted the recipe to increase the cocoa an extra tablespoon, added some vanilla, and added an extra egg. We also only refrigerated around 50 minutes. Our results were slightly more fluffy, not as dense as expected (probably the egg; if we make another batch, I'd just use one) but they taste good, not bland at all as some people mentioned. I think the vanilla helped, though it's probably not a pure red velvet flavor after that. The extra cocoa made them very rich, not nearly as sweet as you'd think. The flavor only got better as they cooled. They look beautiful (we dusted more sugar on top after rolling them in the sugar), and spread perfectly. We'll see how everyone likes them on Christmas! Thanks for sharing :)

I made these and they had no taste...had the right texture and they looked pretty...but no taste! I followed the recipe to a T! Does the person who's the author know the ratings its getting? Disappointed....

Shame on me for not reading comments, these cookies look great, but taste pretty blah! So disappointed....

Decided to make these for my boyfriend's birthday. Got nervous because i didn't read comments until day of. These are not super sweet and probably not meant for those who like sweet desserts. I did add another Tablespoon of cocoa and it could probably afford another. I would be curious using brown sugar instead of regular. These are soft, chewy cookies. Overall, we enjoyed them, but found many ways to tweak recipe to develop more complex flavors. The red velvet flavor is there, but this is not a sweet cookie. It resembles a Russian Tea cookie duye to the high flour ratio.

  30. Brenda

The photo and description were so enticing that I tried these for Christmas as well. The cookies looked absolutely perfect but the flavor just wasn't there! No one ate more than 1. They were so bland - perhaps more chocolate would help, but just wondering if you used a special cocoa powder?

  31. Maggie

I made the, read the comments, and got really nervous. So I went back to the batter and added another tbsp of the cocoa, a tsp of vanilla, 1/2 an egg, and a 1/2 c of powdered sugar. I let the dough chill for 50 minutes before rolling it in the powdered sugar. I coated them heavily. Everybody loved them and they turned out great!

  32. Margo Howland

Can you please add nutritional information to the recipe? And I assume from reading the comments that I should add a bit more cocoa and some vanilla.

  33. Melanie

Read all comments before making these cookies! While they looked beautiful, they tasted AWFUL! I wholeheartedly agree that they taste like bread with no red velvet flavour. The dough before cooking tasted fine, but once they were baked, they were terrible. Totally disappointing because they were going to be a special valentines treat.

  34. hanan

Ive made these cookies but it was horrible they spread open and the texture was like macarons and when i left them to cool i felt like im eating potato chips ..

  35. kathy

I have a bake sale mid December and was wondering about baking ahead of time and freezing the red velvet gooey butterflies. Have you frozen these before?

  36. Tina

I have to disagree with the comments made on this recipe. I followed the recipe exactly. Only chilled my dough for 30 minutes since I was working with and on all cold surfaces. My cookies came out perfectly beautiful, tastes amazing, and they have held perfect texture for 4 days so far. GREAT recipe. Will definitely make them again. Thank you!!!

  37. Jim

    5

I've made these a few times, and they are very rich and delicious.

  38. stacey

Made these today and I must say epic fail!!!!!! Like other comments these were DISGUSTING!! They looked so pretty but they have a weird, doughy, gross ,funky get out of my mouth taste!!l I knew as soon as they came out of the oven because they don't even smell good. You need to take this recipe off your site.

  39. Jennifer

I made these last night and they were gooey, soft, yummy goodness! I only put 2 cups of flour, increased the cocoa to 1/4 cup, and did about 1/2 teaspoon of salt (measurement wasn't exact on that). I also only refrigerated them for like 30 mins because I was in a hurry. But they turned out great!

  40. Kate

I made these cookies exactly like the recipe and they turned out wonderful. I'm not sure why there is so much difference between people loving/hating these. I didn't chill my dough at all, and rolled them right away. They were awesome, and my family loves them!

  41. Mersiha

After reading all the comments, I was quite hesitant to try this recipe. I'm glad I did. My family ate most of the cookies while they were still warm!!!! We loved them. I did add 2 tbsp of cocoa, since I like that flavor.
For the last batch, I added some white chocolate. Again, delicious.

  42. Rachel

    1

Very disappointed! This was a total waste of ingredients. The flour and butter amounts have to be off. They taste like flour. They were also very dry. 3 dozen cookies in the trash!

  43. Micky Eden

    4

After baking these twice I must recommend splitting the mixture into 2 bowls when placing in the fridge because the mixture softens and becomes very, very sticky as your baking and you really need it firm before rolling in the icing sugar. The results were great though. The cookies were massively popular so much so I had requests to bake them again.

  44. Krystin

    5

My husband and I love this recipe. I'm not sure why there is all this hate. It's soft and gooey and delicious. I do add a little more cocoa because I am a chocoholic. We love this recipe!

  45. Terri

This was miserable to mix. I've been at it for hours, and it is way too dry. There is no way to blend in all the dry ingredients. Now I have to try to bake them when it's not even mixed together yet.

I am surprised to see the poor reviews here. Although my cooking time was more than indicated (they were going for about 16-18 minutes!), the recipe came out beautiful and as tasty as any other cookie (I presume from the cream cheese, I didn't taste the cocoa that I can recall). I used the Wilton food dye in place of a liquid one, and they came out beautiful. I will be using these for a cookie exchange next month. Thank you!

After reading many were bummed from this recipe, I was very hesitant to give it a try! Butttt...I did and boy am I glad! I followed the recipe pretty close to the original. Only I left off the 1/4 cup of flour, changed the 1/4 cup of cocoa powder to just shy of a 1/3 cup, and added 3 splashes of vanilla (after I realized the dough was a bit dry). Also I didn't have quite 1 tablespoon of red food coloring, I was probably short about a teaspoon.

I also increased time by approx. 2 minutes.

Wow! These cookies are so yummy! Very rich! Perfect flavoring. Will be making again!

  48. Sabrina

Should have read the reviews, not a good cookie. I tasted the dough and added vanilla and 1/8tsp more of salt, or they would not have had any flavor at all. Such a waste of time, I also added more red food coloring and they still didnt come out as deep red as the photo. I would never make another recipe from this cheif in training sorry to say.

  49. Megan

Horrible recipe! Don't waste your time! I made two batches and both were nasty!! Mad that I lost so much time and money on Christmas Eve for this epic fail. ?

  50. Rose

    5

I am so surprised by all the negative reviews. I thought these were delicious! I actually came back here because two people asked me for the recipe after getting these in my Christmas cookie tins. I wasn't sure these were done when I took them out, but I let them cool a bit on the baking sheet and they were a perfect texture, soft, but definitely cooked through. They were a bit small, but I think that is best since they are so rich.

  51. Ali

I also had a hard time with this recipe. I doubled the amount of cocoa, and the cookies still tasted very flour-y. The consistency was so good, it was just the flavor that wasn't right. Maybe some of the ratios are off?

  52. Priscilla

I made these cookies, and I have to give them a 9/10. They’re super cute and soft and puffy, but I found them a bit too sweet. I would definitely cut back on some of the sugar.

  53. Rebecca Riddle

I made these cookies and was very disappointed. I followed the recipe exactly, chilled exact time, and they spread out so thing and came out terrible. I believe your sugar ratio is WAY off. I would really suggest tweaking this recipe before posting, as I see I’m not the only one who was left dissatisfied.

  54. Dawnette

    1

My hand mixer will not even mix this together because there's too much dry ingredients in this recipe Is the absolute worst recipe I have ever made off of pinterest

  55. Judy Kelley

I had to add another egg and additional 4 Tablespoons of butter. the batter made by this recipe was too dry.

  56. Melissa

How many cookies does this recipe make?

  57. Debra Levy

DO NOT WASTE YOUR ENERGY AND TIME ON THIS RECIPE... AWFUL. JUST DUMPED THEM IN THE TRASH!!!

  58. Jules

The cookies tasted like flower dipped in powdered sugar. I do not recommend this recipe. It look good on the outside but was not vary flavorful.

  59. Jules Gonitzke

    3

The cookes tasted like flower dipped in powdered suger.they were not vary flavorful. We left them in the oven for 8 mins extra but were still a little raw ! I do not recommend this recipe! I tried it to see is it was that bad , it is not terrible but they weren’t good!

  60. Kersten

My friend had made them and they just didn’t taste, look or feel like red velvet Lillian. They took extra time to bake and they still didn’t cook all the way!! We had to put extra powdered sugar on them and they still didn’t taste right. They were so flour-y and also tasted like nothing but flour. We were looking forward to these cookies. They did not turn out!!! I do not recommend trying this recipe!!

  61. Julene

    1

Just finished making them. Have no taste and dough is tough. Followed directions. Dough came out brown, not red. Won't make again.

  62. Susan

I can't even get all the dry ingredients to mix in. More than 4 cups of dry ingredients and no liquid at all, just the creamed fats and egg? I can't even get all the dry ingredients to mix in. Bailing mid-recipe on this one.

  63. Noor

    1

Ratio of dry ingredients to wet ingredients was inaccurate. Spent twice the time trying to tweak the recipe to salvage the mixture, but nothing worked. Added 2 eggs to allow the ingredients to bind. They turned out solid but with zero flavour. Waste of time, money, and ingredients.

I have made these cookies several times. Now a family favorite and part of our annual Christmas cookie lineup. Also a must for Valentine’s Day and weddings. The dough is a little sticky but worth the mess. I use a standard size cookie scoop and cut them in half since we like bite size cookies and reduce the baking time by 2 minutes.

  65. Kendall

I’ve been making these cookies for a couple years now and I always come back to this recipe. These cookies are the perfect balance of rich and sweet; light chocolately flavor but so rich at the same time! The batter is pretty sticky but makes the best moist cookies! These are my favorite cookies to bake and they have yet to be beat!
