Southwestern Hummus
I LOVE hummus. In fact, it was one of the only “salty” things I craved with this last pregnancy. I remember one night I went out and bought 5 different hummuses because I couldn’t decide which flavor I wanted at the grocery store. When I came back home with this 5 hummuses in hand, my husband about had a heart attack. He knew me better and knew there was no way in heck I would be able to eat all of them before they went bad since I had already opened them all up to sample them. And those hummus containers aren’t cheap. Thats when he said, why don’t you just make your own hummus and experiment with what flavors you want.
So I did. I actually had my mom help me create this recipe. I knew I wanted a southwestern flavor, but didn’t know quite how to achieve it. We put our two minds together and this delicious appetizer was born. The great thing about hummus is that it is relatively healthy and you don’t have to feel super guilty for eating a lot of it in one sitting… like I so often do! At least it isn’t loaded with cream cheese like most dips right?! :)
Anyway, I really encourage you to try out this new flavor! If you love hummus and if you love a good kick of flavor, then you are really going to love this recipe!
- 1 (16 oz) can Garbanzo Beans, drained
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- juice from ½ of lemon
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 Tablespoon roasted red pepper
- Blend all ingredients in a food processor until you get the correct consistency.
- Dip Pita chips and enjoy!

I love hummus and will definitely try this one. Most recipes call for Tahini and I can never find a small jar...I've always found very large jars so I've been reluctant to make homemade. I like that this recipe doesn't call for that!

I'm a new hummus lover. But have found that a lot of the store bought flavors are too strong for me. So I've greatly considered along our own. I'm going to try this one with a little added cumin for a smokey flavor. Thanks!

I LOVE Hummus!! I make a Roasted Red Pepper Hummus myself. I also make my own roasted red peppers and my own Tahini!! So simple! I use a 1/2 pint jar of roasted red peppers that are chopped and put some in the hummus and the rest are chopped and put on top of the hummus with the red pepper oil on top also! SO YUMMY!!!

I'm really excited to make this but I have a question. The roasted red pepper in the recipe, is it an actual pepper that is roasted or some sort of spice? It may be a silly question, but I need clarification. Thanks.

Forget the tablespoon idea, no flavor there. Get a jar of roasted red peppers and add a whole pepper, some cumin also. If you want southwest flavor buy a can of chipolte peppers and add one or two (four or five for me) to the food processor.
