Homemade Cookie Dough Oreo Cookies Recipe

I recently shared my Rice Krispy Treat Frosting recipe inspired by one of the two new OREO flavors that came out… then  it got me thinking… well, why not recreate the Cookie Dough Oreos with my own spin?!

My family could not stop raving about these cookies! The cookie dough frosting is the frosting I created a few months back. I then smashed it between two chocolate chewy cake mix cookies… and lets just say the end result is AH-MAZING! The mini chocolate chips in the frosting add a nice little crunch and texture to each bite and the cookie dough frosting is honestly what makes these cookies.

If you need a new, quick and delicious treat- then I strongly encourage you to give these bad boys a try!

*Disclaimer Side note: This frosting is eggless, but I have had some readers tell me that there can be a small risk with consuming raw flour, so eat at your own risk :)

Recipe type: Dessert
Serves: 15-20
Ingredients
  • COOKIES:
  • 1 box devil's food cake mix, dry not prepared
  • 2 eggs
  • ⅓ cup oil
  • FROSTING:
  • 10 Tbsp. butter softened
  • ⅔ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 envelope dream whip
  • 2-4 Tbsp. milk
  • ½ cup flour
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ⅔ cup mini chocolate chips
Instructions
  1. TO MAKE COOKIES: Mix and roll into small balls. Gently flatten. Bake at 350 degrees F for 8-10 minutes. BUT DO NOT OVER BAKE! Its better to be a little undercooked but not over cooked. The softer the better. Let cool completely.
  2. FOR THE FROSTING: Cream butter in a large bowl. Add brown sugar, vanilla and Dream Whip and evenly beat together. Add milk, flour and powdered sugar and beat to evenly incorporate until smooth. (If you need to add a little milk to thin it, feel free to do so. I prefer my frosting thick so I never needed to). Stir in mini chocolate chips.
  3. I like to cover my plastic frosting bowl with saran wrap and stick it in the fridge for about 15 minutes. It thickens up pretty nicely :) You don't have to do that step though.
  4. Frost bottom half of one cookie then top it with another cookie. Repeat until all homemade oreo cookies are made.

I just made these last night and my husband and I were like "oooooooh myyyyyyy gaaaaaaaah!" I couldn't believe how easy they were too. SO SO SO SO GOOD.

While I'm sure these cookies are amazing, you shouldn't call them "Oreos" when there isn't any Oreos listed in the ingredients. Oreo is a specific brand of cookie, and all others are nothing but a chocolate sandwich cookie. I hate it when I'm at the Fair & a place advertises they have fried Oreos, only to see a package of some cheap no name chocolate sandwich cookie that tastes NOTHING like an Oreo! Oreos are my FAVORITE store bought cookie!

They're called "HOMEMADE oreos." Same thing with homemade ketchup or homemade applesauce...there's not ketchup or applesauce in the ingredients because it's what you are making--the end product. Some people...honestly.

What a great idea. I've been wanting to try all the new Oreos, but they're made with palm oil, so I feel so guilty when I buy them. I guess I'll just have to make my own now.

Nikki...love your recipes, but there are often ingredients that I am not familiar with, and being in Australia, am not sure what they can be substituted with. For example: what is Dream Whip? What are Graham biscuits? I keep storing your recipes in the hope that one day, I'll find suitable substitutes, but if you could enlighten me as to what they are, that would make things a jolly sight easier...
Thanks so much...and keep 'em rolling!!!!

You can omit the dream whip. It is just used a bit for texture, but still tastes amazing without it :)

Is there a substitute for the dream whip I can use? I've never seen it in our stores where I live. Thanks!

You can just omit it, still tastes good without it :)

Hi. I wanna make these at home I just wanna ask what can be an alternative ingredient if I don't have the devil cake mix and the envelope dream whip?

    1. Chef in Training

any chocolate cake mix will do and you can omit the dream whip. It just adds a little different texture but not needed.

  12. Jen

Is there a substitute I can use for the flour in the frosting? The idea of eating raw flour doesn't sound appetizing to me but the rest sounds amazing!

  13. Michelle j

Delicious but my question is should these be stored in refrigerator?

My daughter won 1st place (out of 19 cookies) last weekend with this recipe at a cookie contest!! Making more right now for Christmas since we need more!! thanks for recipe...it's a keeper
Only suggestion is not to make them too big...it's cake so it gets big.
