These brownies are so festive and delicious for the holiday season!
Recipe type: Dessert
Ingredients
  • 1 box DUNCAN HINES Holiday Velvets, dry
  • 1 cup butter, divided
  • 6 Tbsp. evaporated milk, divided
  • ⅔ cup milk chocolate chips
FROSTING
  • 3 Tbsp. butter, softened
  • 2 Tbsp. milk, more if needed to reach desired consistency
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar, more if needed to reach desired consistency
  • ½ tsp. vanilla
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray an 8x8 baking pan and set aside.
  2. Pour the two bags of cake mix into two separate bowls.
  3. Add ½ cup of melted butter to each of the two bowls.
  4. Add 3 Tbsp. evaporated milk to each of the two bowls.
  5. Beat/stir the two bowls until they are each evenly mixed.
  6. Press Red Velvet brownie batter onto bottom of 8x8 pan. Bake at 350 degrees F for 7 minutes.
  7. After 7 minutes. Pull out of oven and evenly sprinkle chocolate chips over top.
  8. Using hands, flatten the green velvet into flat thin sections and lay over the chocolate chips. Repeat until entire top is covered with the green velvet and all the batter is used.
  9. Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes or until cooked through. You don't want to over cook.
  10. Let brownies cool then frost.
  11. TO MAKE FROSTING: Beat softened butter, milk, powdered sugar and vanilla until well mixed. Add more milk or powdered sugar as needed to reach desired consistency. Top with sprinkles if desired.

Enjoy!

Quick question...in the list of ingredients, you mention to purchase ONE box of Duncan Hines Holiday Velvets, but in the directions, it mentions to pour ONE bag in a bowl and the other bag in another bowl? Is there two bags in the Holiday Velvets box or should we be purchasing two? By the way, I am addicted to your website - thank you for all the great recipes. :)

    1. Chef in Training

I have a question - do you think its definitely worth it to make the home-made icing (above) instead of buying the vanilla canned (store-bought) icing? I work FT and alot of times try and take short-cuts; however, if you think its much better tasting to do home-made icing, that is what i will do :) thanks!

you can use either. I personally prefer the taste of homemade, but some people love the taste of the store bought. It is all about your personal preference :)

I still don't see the second box of cake mix mentioned. Nor do I see any mention of green cake coloring. I assume that is how you make the green layer. How much? Are there any other ingredients we should be aware of?

    1. Chef in Training

The box of holiday velvets comes with two pouches in it. A red velvet pouch and a green velvet pouch. It is just the one box. Sorry for any confusion

I'm actually making these right now and they aren't setting. Any clues? They've already been cooking for 30 minutes.
