Chicken Cordon Bleu Pasta

Sometimes we are all in need of a little inspiration when it comes to dinners.  Last week, I posted on my Facebook Page, that I had chicken but was wondering what to make with it.  Several of you gave amazing ideas and one of them in particular popped out at me… Chicken Cordon Bleu Pasta!  Only, I didn’t have a recipe to go off of, so I created one and it was DELICIOUS!  I HIGHLY recommend this dinner!

Chicken Cordon Bleu Pasta

This will be one of the best dinners you will every make! It is So easy and LOADED with delicious flavor!
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces penne pasta
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 1/2 cup shredded swiss cheese
  • 2 1/2 cups cooked and chopped chicken
  • 3/4 cup bacon cooked and chopped
  • 3/4 cup diced ham
  • 1/8 cup bread crumbs

Instructions

  • Cook pasta according to its package's directions. Drain. I always add a little olive oil after I drain it and stir in around so the pasta noodles don't stick together or the pot.
  • Heat cream cheese on stove over medium low heat until melted. Stir in heavy cream. Stir until completely combined. Add onion powder and garlic salt until it tastes how you would like it to. Stir 1 cup of cheese until smooth consistency.
  • In a 9x13, layer noodles, chicken, bacon and ham. Pour sauce over top.
  • Sprinkle top with 1/2 cup cheese and bread crumbs.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for 15 minutes or until heated through.

Ever since my first visit to your blog, when you'd posted the Oreo Fluff recipe (which I made, and which my husband and son DEVOURED), I've learned to grab a napkin before my next visit because I'm guaranteed to drool over your recipes. This one is no exception. It looks amazing! Going to give it a try later this week. Thanks!

Approximately how many strips of bacon should I fry to make 3/4 cup? Thanks!

    1. Susan Eyring

I used 6 strips - extra crispy - so they shrunk down enough to make a generous 3/4 cup..

  16. Katie Mahoney

Hi, this looks awesome! Do you think you could substitute Greek yogurt for the cream or some of the cream? Looks a bit decadent but I wondered what you thought about this substitution. Thanks!

    1. Barbara

I usually use skimmed evaporated milk for heavy, Its not as thick but does the job.

  17. Jeff David

Hi, you will have seen that the new Food on Friday ingredient is chicken. I noticed that you did this post on chicken which I think would be great linked in. We already have a collection of over 40 recipes which is wonderful. At the moment the Food on Friday edition with the most links is Beef with 73 – I get the feeling though that Chicken could become the new record holder!
Have a great day and thank you for following Carole's Chatter. It 's nice to have you along for my blogging journey.

  25. Alyssa

This sounds so good! But I was wondering what you think I could use instead of heavy cream. I have read that fat free half & half would work? Is that true or is there better suggestions?

  26. Trixie

I made this for dinner tonight. It's VERY tasty and VERY VERY rich. Thank you for the recipe, I will definitely be making this again. (0=

  33. Ashley

I found this on pinterest and made it the other night - my family loved it! I just posted it on my blog and linked back to you. Thanks so much for the recipe, it's a keeper!

  34. Jazmine

Just made it. Soo delicious and I am soo full. Can't wait for my 2yo son to try it. The only thing I added was a bit of dijon mustard.

  35. erin

this sounds delish. Could you use yogurt instead of the heavy cream? Seems very rich, fattening and caloric and just wondering if that could be a substitution?

  36. Elizabeth B.

I'd love to make this, but I'm not sure where to add the other 1 cup of shredded cheese. Please advise? Thanks!

  37. Jennifer Paul Gibson

Just love this, had to add it to my websites sweetly approved Pinterest Board. Just so yummy! Recommending to all my followers! http://pinterest.com/pin/219620919299428602/

  38. Lorena

I made lunch for 17 people this past week. I decided to try this recipe to make for the meal. Not only did my husband love it when I made it for practice, but everyone at the lunch loved it too! It is very easy to make and very flavorful.

    1. Carl

My Grandaughter (student UNLV) made this for our family, delicious....how many servings to the base recipe?

    2. Sally

I am considering making this for 17 adults. There is no servings noted for this recipe so how did you decide on the amounts needed for a large crowd?

  39. Shantel

Just made this with some adjustments. I used skim milk instead of heavy cream and it worked perfectly. The cream cheese thickens the milk up great. I also only used 1/2 of a fat free Cream cheese block and melted it with 1/2 c onions. Plenty of flavor with my adjustments, just a bit healthier.

  40. Jodi P

I made this tonight, everyone loved it, thank you for sharing!!

  41. Chelsy

I made this tonight and HONESTLY it was probably my favorite meal. EVER. Thanks so much for the recipe! I did add a bit of paprika in the cheese sauce, but otherwise I made it exactly like yours! SO GOOD!

  42. Crystal Geslak

Thank you! I will be making this next weekend for the family. Looks delicious.

  43. Janelle T

I just made this the other night, and let me say.. it was very tasty!! I didn't have penne or ziti on hand, so just used what I had in my pantry (Radiatore) and pre-cooked chicken breasts over the weekend to use during the week for meals, making it a lot quicker to cook after work. Time saver of also using pre-packed ham cubes and bacon bits was helpful too. The sauce was very tasty and the meal came together well! Good as left overs too! Thanks for sharing your recipe!

  44. Barbara Schulke

    Has anyone froze this recipe?

  45. Jess L

This was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!! One of (if not THE) best recipe from pinterest that we've tried!!

  46. Barbara Schulke

    Can this recipe be frozen?

  47. Lisa Saragosa

Made this tonight, husbad and kids loved it..Husband said it was perfect! Followed the recipe to the tee!! Did add a little more bacon:) THANK YOU!! Will be making again!

  48. Sherry Lochner

Ahhhh-mazing! Thank you for posting! I used 1 cup cream and 1 cup half-n-half. I also used butter crackers instead of bread crumbs on top.

  49. TerryFamilyMomma

Has anyone frozen this meal? Tried it for the first time tonite and my husband was literally speechless! Sooooooooo good!

  50. Linda

What is the red stuff in the picture? Tomatoes or red peppers?

    1. Chef in Training

      thats the bacon :)

  51. Rosalie

Hey does anyone know how many calories per serving?

  52. Latasha

Made this tonight for dinner. I paired it with sweet peas. It was delicious! Boyfriend went back for seconds. This is a keeper.

  53. Lori

Is that 2 whole chicken breasts (4 pieces) or 2 breast halves?

    1. Chef in Training

2 individual chicken breasts, about 1 to 1.5 pounds total weight

  54. Laurie

This recipe was very good, but I found the method to not work for the recipe. My suggestion would be to make a white sauce with 3Tab butter...3Tab of flour 2-3 cups of milk or 1/2&1/2 . I prefered this the second day after I mixed it with this white sauce and adding additional 2cups of cheese to it.
Its not that the recipe tasted bad.... its just the cheese isnt at all creamy like it is by the addition of a cheese sauce. I will make again..But I will use my gut knowing that I should have made the white sauce to begin with.

  55. Amber Crump

Can this be frozen and re-heated?

  56. Llubia

Hi. On this recipe does anyone know how many it feeds?

  57. Colleen

I want to try this recipe but hate swiss cheese - what do you think a good alternative would be?

  58. Shirley Leyva

You might also try it with a mix of swiss and gruyere cheeses. I am going to try this. My husband LOVES Chicken Cordon Blue. Might also mix some cheese with the breadcrumbs or use panko.

  59. Donna Graham

Made this tonight my husband really liked it! I did not have any ham so left it out, it was still delicious! I did cut the recipe in half since it was just the two of us. Can't wait to make this for family dinner!!! Yummy!!!!!

  60. Melanie Bainter

I made this last night for my husband and one of his friends and they couldn't stop saying how good it was the entire time they were eating. Even after, they kept saying Thank you for making dinner!! :) IT WAS SO GOOD! It was a little rich and I'd try using something a little different than the heavy cream next time just because I can't bare looking at all the calories that's in that little pint of goodness. And I'd use more chicken - just because I LOVE chicken in this recipe. Thank you so much for sharing!

  61. Sam

How many people does this serve

  62. Kelly

T H IS LOOKS SO GOOD!

  63. Sarah Doyle

The only way this could be better, is if it were TOTALLY GUILT FREE! NO CALORIES! Wowzers, I ate way to much, lol! My 4 little boys enjoyed it as well, delish! Thank you!

  64. Christina

  65. Jamie

I make this for my family all the time!!! We absolutely love it!!! Thanks for the recipe!! It's fantastic!!!

  66. Amy

Made this last night for dinner - it was FANTASTIC!!! I used half & half instead of heavy cream to save a few calories, light cream cheese, used shell pasta and used only 1/2 cup Hormel bacon pieces (again to save a few calories and to simplify it a little!) - we LOVED it!! Thanks for a wonderful recipe!

  67. Amy

Amazing!! To make a bit healthier I substituted Greek yogurt and milk for the heavy cream and it was awesome! Thanks!!

  68. Molly

Made this for dinner tonight 10.16.13 - was fabulous!! Everyone loved it!! Thanks for posting the recipe!!

  69. Arica

I just started cooking for my boyfriend and I'm always confused on what the side should be. Like to this meal, what would be a good side?

  70. Becca

I made this tonight and was SO EXCITED to eat it because it looked super good, but then I tried it....
The swiss cheese, heavy cream, cream cheese sauce obviously didn't turn out for me :-( It smells and tastes super nasty and maybe burnt? It didn't look burnt when I was mixing/melting it. What did I do wrong? I'm super bummed because that was A LOT of food (pasta, chicken, bacon, etc) and would have fed us for a week! Plus it looked super delish! Any suggestions? I'm would like to try again as I'm sure it was operator error... but I want to know what I did wrong so I can fix it and not ruin another dish. Thanks...

  71. Regina

I made this for family Sunday dinner and it went over so well! Very filling and easy to do :)

  74. Kate Lorenzon

Oooh I have a similar recipe that I haven't made in a while... Might pull that old trick out if my magic hat this week. I use a ready to serve rotisserie chicken from the food store, adds another special flavor!!!!

  75. Dolores Jones

Wow i love coocking with new and exciting ideas. Thank u.

  76. kim

My boyfriend hates cream cheese. Can you use a different kind of cheese?

  77. Dani

So glad I stumbled across this recipe! Had to use milk instead ofheavy c ream and used different cheese and only chicken. (using up what I had left in my pantry/fridge) and my family loved it! Without telling him what the recipe was called my husband said it reminded him of Chicken Cordon Blue! Win for dinner last night

    1. Sherry

This was great! I made it the other night and my son went back for thirds. I had to stop him so he wouldn't get sick before going to marching band practice.

  82. Monica

Just a quick question...the photo shows what looks like tomatoes or roasted red peppers, as well as basil and/or oregano--are these included? or did you use Italian bread crumbs? and if so, how much? Thanks!

  88. Deborah Mielke

Very good recipe. Would use at least half milk instead of cream next time as it was a bit too rich. Would also add a bot of chpped parsley for color.

THIS IS A WINNER! Especially for picky husbands. My husband likes chicken cordon bleu a lot, so I thought I would make this for him. He took one bite, slowly lifted his head up with the WIDEST eyes I have ever seen, saying "MMMMMMMM" while smiling, then proceeded to stuff his face clear full and said that was the best dinner I had made in a while. He even went back and started eating it out of the pan. This recipe is most definitely going to become a regular! Thank you!

  105. Christa Mistak

    5

You're pasta recipe is one of my family's favorite! I changed it up a few years ago, where I removed the ham out of the recipe and added 1 lb. of shrimp (sauted).
Obviously this is no longer a cordon bleu pasta but it tastes amazing! We now put more shrimp than chicken in the pasta. Also there are times when i replace the bacon for pancetta.

  106. Deanna

My family loves this! Sometimes I add french fried onions to the topping.

  107. Mia

I made this tonight for dinner. Easy to make and it was delicious. Definitely keeping this recipe. Thank you

Made this for dinner tonight. It is really tasty. Only thing I changed was I put the ingredients into individual large ramekins for a nice presentation at the table. Instead of layering the ingredients in the ramekin, I chose to mix everything together first and then put in the dishes and topped each with a little cheese and breadcrumbs. I also added about 1 TBSP of dijon mustard to the sauce. Delicious. Will definitely make again.

I have this in the oven right now. Smells delicious. I used 1 tsp of garlic powder instead of garlic salt and I only had 1/2 cup of heavy cream so just used milk for the rest. I didn't have swiss cheese so I used mozerella and gouda and then crushed ritz crackers on top. Made a loaf of homemade bread to go with it 😋
