Banana Cookies... these are one of my absolute favorite cookies of all time! They are soft and delicious and are perfect for those browning bananas!

\My grandma’s cookbook really does have some of THE BEST recipes in it.  She gives each grandchild two of her cookbooks when they graduate high school to help them get started on their own.  One of these cookbooks is dedicated purely to desserts, the other is for everything else!

I have treasured these two cookbooks over the past years.  I have it on my bucket list to try at least every single recipe in these cookbooks at some point my life time (I still have a LONG way to go! haha!)

Banana Cookies... these are one of my absolute favorite cookies of all time! They are soft and delicious and are perfect for those browning bananas!

I remember as a little girl, my grandma and I would always make these cookies together regularly…probably because she knew how much I loved them!  It is also an awesome way to use up brown bananas!

I changed her recipe up just a bit to replace the shortening with butter and because of that changed a few of the steps around.

I promise these will be a huge hit! They are so soft and taste like banana bread in cookie form! This is a must try!

Just wanted to drop by and say that my son and i made these cookies this weekend, after i started following your blog, and they are fantastic! We're in London so had to convert the measurements to metric, but all turned out ok! Your Grandma's recipe has gone transatlantic, and into my recipe book!!

  10. Amy M

So I just made these,.. FABULOUS! :)

  11. Sheri

I made these for my children for an after school snack and they declared these cookies to be their new favorite! They seriously are the best! Yum! ...They freeze great too.

  12. Sarah

These look great! I'm just wondering what can be substituted for the shortening? Thanks!

    1. Jennifer Sue Prekopa

I came across this recipe on Pinterest a few days ago when looking for a banana cookie that used real bananas instead of banana flavored pudding. I made a modified version of these tonight, and they were awesome! (I used 1/3c applesauce instead of shortening, added a tbsp of corn starch to thicken them a little and keep them fresh for longer, added walnuts, and added a few chocolate chips to a few of them. Such a great alternative to banana bread! I'm going to make them next week with pumpkin instead of bananas.

  13. Amber

I just finished making these...DELICIOUS! They are fluffy and moist, and the frosting on top...wow! Can you freeze the frosting? If not, anyone know how long it will keep in the fridge?

  14. Kristina

They look awesome! Do you think they will work without oats? I have an allergy to them. :(

  15. freyja

hi i was wondering if its possible to substitute the oatmeal with something else? thanks :)

  16. Nancy Sabina

Mmmmm! We just made these and ate them for our peaceful Sunday afternoon. Thanks for the fun and the yum!

  17. Micia

i just made these and my my frosting doesn't look like yours :( maybe I didn't whip long enough? it was real liquidy and suggestions? Cooke was awesome my boys loved it :) Thanks Micia

  18. Rhetorical Randi

Delicious cookies! I made them recently and I love how soft they are, even the next day. I did skip the frosting (just to limit the sugar) and added a handful of semi-sweet chocolate chips to the dough... great addition if, like me, you love the chocolate/banana combo :)

  19. Anonymous

Wondering if anyone knows.....can the shortening be substituted with coconut oil?

  20. Anonymous

I made these today, and substituted 3/4 c. applesauce for the shortening to make them a bit healthier. They are absolutely delicious!! I will definitely be adding this recipe to my "favorites". Thanks for posting!! :)

  21. Tiffany

Found your blog via Pinterest! I just made these today and we all loved them! I also substituted applesauce for the shortening...trying to be somewhat healthy ;) Can't wait to try out some of your other recipes! Thanks for sharing.

  22. Emmy Jo

Made these today and they are great! I am not a fan of frosting so I skipped it and they are still delicious.

  23. Anonymous

I made these last week and they are really good! I think I ate all but 4...and this recipe makes a good amount of cookies. I think I am going to try butter instead of shortening next time! Thanks

  24. Laura

Great idea, I wondered about that! The texture was OK?

  25. Jessica

Me and my 4 year old made them today! Super easy and delicious!! This recipe is a keeper!! Thanks

  26. Kristin

  28. ellysha

    Hi,
what kind of book did your grandma gave u? care to share?

    1. Chef in Training

Its just two giant 3 ring binders of family recipes. She typed them all out and put them together so everyone could have a hard copy of the recipes :)

  29. Joyce

I will try this. I freeze my bananas till I need them. Good idea to add nutella!

  30. Mejia Mamma

YUMMM...here's my modified version: http://mejiamamma.blogspot.com/2012/09/banana-oatmeal-cookies.html# - soooo good!!

  31. IŞIN

hi , would you tell me how does the frosting make?
Is it cooked or just blended ?

    1. Chef in Training

Just blended! Make sure the butter is softened before hand :)

  32. Victoia

Just found this recipe on Pintrest and it sounded so good I had to try it! It is delicious! Haven't decided if I am going to frost them or not, tasted great without frosting. I did use the applesauce instead of the shortening so you do need to lightly grease the cookie sheet. Great recipe!

    1. Gail H.

      Victoria, did the applesauce work?

  33. Debbie Lamarre

The recipe calls for milk, now we use 0% skim milk will that make difference in this recipe and others?

  34. Deidra

YUM! Perfect timing too....I have bananas I need to use. Can you substitute the shortening with something else?

    1. Chef in Training

      you can use butter :)

  35. Gail H.

Nikki, I'm at a loss as what to use for "shortening"? I would normally use crisco, but anything else I could sub here?

  36. Paul Marshall

Please indicate what type of shortening you use . Thanks

    1. Chef in Training

I use Crisco vegetable shortening. You can also use butter :)

  37. Mary

My grandmother always made these for us kids and these are still being made in our family today by most of us kids. The only other ingredient that grandma added was 2 cups of chocolate chips. I have the Chiquita Banana Recipe Book that was my moms printed in 1950 which has the recipe.

  38. Lynn Doire

These look absolutely delicious and I am defineately going to have to make these for my 14 yr old daughter. She loves anything banana and has been asking me for the past couple of days for a banana cream pie but think I'll surprise her tomorrow after school with these. Thanks for always inspiring me to cook/bake for my family or else we'd be eating out all the time lol! Thanks again!

  39. Kaaron Sloan

These cookies are"to die for". My husband likes without the icing but I loved with the icing. Thank you, as this is a recipe I will keep and use..

  40. cassi

By "shortening" arebyou talking about butter or cisco?

  41. pm

recipe calls for 1 egg. directions refer to plural 'eggs'

also how big are your spoon drops??

    our cookies are not flat.

    thanks

  42. Dale

Is it possible to substitute shortening?

    1. Chef in Training

yep you can sub it out with butter! I have made it that way and it is just as good :)

    2. Manuela

Hi, well, I just made these for the very first time because I didn't want to toss my bananas.... This are delicious cookies!!! But I have a question, I just made them for my hubby and he wont eat them all in one night, how long do they last? Should they go in the fridge, cause of the buttermilk frosting?
      Thank youuu

  43. Anci Haugerud

Hi! I live in Norway and I've tried several of your recipes before. However we don't use shortening much. Is it in liquid form in this recipe? I've found something to use, but it is solid, like margarine/butter. Thank you for your great recipes!

    1. Chef in Training

you can just sub it out with butter. I have tried it that way and it is just as good! :) Hope that helps!

  44. Kelley

There is no nutrition information on the banana cookie recipe.

  45. Mary

    5

Enjoy - oh yes - these are delish!!

  46. Kay Hoeflich

Can't wait to try these, however, in the ingredients you state one egg and in the instructions you state plural eggs. Is it only one egg? Also do you bake these on a cookie sheet that is greased or not greased? Thanks so much. Can't wait to try these.

    1. Chef in Training

just one egg and yes I grease the cookie sheet :)

    2. Susan

I put parchment paper on cookie sheet so no greasing was necessary

  47. Kay Hoeflich

    5

Under the ingredients you say one egg however under the instructions you say eggs. Is it one or more eggs? Also do you use a greased or ungreased cookie sheet? Thank you. Can't wait to try these.

  48. Joanna

What can I substitute for the shortening? Oil? And how much?

    1. Chef in Training

I have successfully substituted butter several times :) cup for cup. Haven't tried oil.

  49. Betsy

if I don't have any shortening can I substitute butter?

  50. Susan

The cookies were delicious. I did however, use butter in place of the shortening & only put a small amout of the frosting on the cookie. Wrapped in air tight container, cookies stay soft for quite some time.

  51. Kahla

Not happy with thise recipe at all. I love to bake and this recipe did not turn out at all. Did not end up looking like the picture. The cookies did not flatten out and turned out like little pucks. Temp was to high and time was to long because they ended up burning. Waste of ingredients and time. I would not recommend trying this recipe.

Sorry, but you must have done something wrong. I followed this recipe to a T, and it came out absolutely perfectly! AND they looked just like the picture. Try again - you won't be disappointed if you follow it perfectly! :-)

These were a hit. My kids loved them and so did my co-workers.

  54. Julie

Can these be made with gluten free flour?

  55. Margo

    5

Made these cookies today and they do indeed taste like banana bread....soft and delicious. The frosting is a nice addition and makes them a bit nicer to serve as a dessert, but not necessary. The bare cookies are such a treat with a cold glass of milk!!!

  56. Elaine

My cookies were not great. Was I supposed to sift the oatmeal? That would have helped the texture a good deal. Also, since the banana flavor is very mild, I my try one of the commenters suggestions to add chocolate chips.

I was googling a recipe for my overripe bananas and I came across a lot. I decided to make this one (without the frosting) and oh my goodness!!! They are delicious!!! And so easy, too! :-D This is definitely a keeper! Thank you SO much for sharing!

  58. Megan

How many cookies does this yield about? Debating doing them for a cookie swap because they're very different than what everyone else brings.

  59. Janine (aka bean)

All I can say is thank you! Those are the most delicious banana cookies ever, mmm mmm mmm! I like it better than banana bread. I left out the frosting, next time I’ll try it.

  60. Ronda La Duke

Hi Nikki! Thank you so much for sharing your Grandmothers recipe! It was just what I was looking for. I put 1/2 whole wheat flour in them and used organic flour and sugar. Yes I'm trying to make them a little more healthy so we don't feel so guilty eating them. They are so yummy! I also used 1/2 cream cheese in the frosting instead of all butter! Yummy again.

  61. Marilyn Sood

We enjoyed these cookies as a wonderful alternative to banana bread to use up our ripe bananas. The only change I made was that I used Becel instead of butter and added 1 1/2 c of milk chocolate chips.
As I thought 400 degrees was too high, I pre-heated the oven to 400 then turned it down to 380 for the full 10 minutes of actual baking. I let them cool on the baking tray, then removed with a spatula as they were just too soft to remove any sooner to cool on a baking rack. They turned out deeelicious!

AMAZING! Was scrolling and looking for a recipe to use my ripe bananas besides banana bread/muffins. I am so glad I decided to make these. I love handed down family recipes, always feel like I am cooking with a little love. Thank you for sharing! *I followed your directions to a T except halved the frosing recipe. Cookies were delicious on their own!!

My family just devoured them and we had so many bananas we made extra for our neighbors! Absolutely delicious! Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe. It was a great alternative to banana bread, which my kids will ask for, but then get finicky about eating.
