Caramel Apple Dip

My kids LOVE their apple slices, as do me and my husband. We find ourselves sitting down to this fruit at snack time more often than not. I was browsing my grandmas cookbook the other day and stumbled upon this recipe for Caramel Apple Dip. I decided to put the recipe  to the test and it turned out absolutely fantastic. My husband raved about how yummy it was. But who wouldn’t love a little sugar and caramel smeared on their apple?! I am not complaining one bit  :)

Note: I usually double this recipe if more people than my family are eating it. It disappears so quick! It is definitely a crowd favorite.

This isa great recipe for fall!! I cannot wait for some crisp apples!

  2. Linda

Just wondering, do you think his would hold up on warm in a crockpot? I was looking for this exactly for a kids sport event dinner. Thanks.

    1. Marcy

I have made a dip real close to this recipe and it calls for a crock pot. I wouldn't be afraid to try this one in it.

  3. Averie @ Averie Cooks

I want this on everything. Pinned! Cannot believe it's apple season and the fall already! Although in SoCal and I know in AZ, it's not exactly 'cool' right now!

  4. cHrystal

Do you serve this warm, cold, or room temperature?

    1. Chef in Training

I like mine slightly warm, but I am sure any which way would still be delicious :)

  5. sally @ sallys baking addiction

I just bought a couple pounds of pink lady apples and I would love a dip like this to serve them with. Kevin and I usually snack on fruit after dinner. This would be perfect!

  6. emily

oh yum! I love dip for apples... makes me think I should pull out some pumpkin and start thinking about fall :o)

  7. Mary Beth

OMG! I made this tonight and it is so delish!!!! However, I have to cut me and my family off. We CAN'T eat it all in one night! Will this hold overnight in the fridge, or is this a one night only dip?

  8. Beth

Hi I was wondering, I rather use the caramel chips, how much should I use instead?

  9. Socalgal52

Now I'm hooked, I always keep some in the fridge with a spoon at the ready. Once in a whole I remember to slice some apples to go wit it. ;)

  10. Dana

Just out of curiosity, do you use hard or soft caramels?

    1. Chef in Training

I have always used either the individually wrapped kraft caramels (unwrapped of course) or the kraft caramel bits and made caramel to each packages directions.

    2. James

So, when you are finished eating, just store in the fridge and reheat at a later time in the microwave?

    3. Christine

Can this be canned ( a sealed jar for later use) how long does it last before it goes bad?

    4. Sherri

That is what I am wondering about. The recipe states to 'serve immediately.' It sound delicious, but I'd prefer using a recipe that I know will 'keep' for a few days if we don't eat it all in one sitting! I wish the recipe were more specific regarding storage.

  11. Phillis

You can also use low fat cream cheese

  12. Lucinda

Made this today and it was the hit of the party! I used lite cream cheese with no problems! I served it as room temp and it stayed nice and soft, unlike packaged caramel dip.

    1. Kellee

I have made this for years, but j use a jar of caramel ice cream topping. Saves the trouble of melting the caramels ;) So yummy... I could eat it with a spoon!

  13. Cyndi M.

How much homemade caramel would I sub for packaged? 1.5 cups?

  14. chef beth

May be faster if you use caramel syrup you make in a medium size batch ahead of time & keep in you fridge. I usually have it on hand since I just love caramel!

  15. Beth

Don't want to lose this recipe for the fall when all those nice apples come on! Sooo excited!!

  16. lynne

Hi, when you mention caramel do you mean the small block of sweet? Could you perhaps send me a pic to see what we have as a equivalent in SA. Thank you Lynne

I just made this for the kids I'm watching for the summer and they loved it. Thanks for a quick easy snack

I've made this without the caramels, will have to try this one!!!! Thank you!!

  19. Judy Crummett

Wondering if you really need the brown sugar…wouldn't it be sweet enough with sugar from caramels?

  20. Shanna

Can you make ahead? Should you chill or is better in crockpot warm?

  21. kim

Do you think I could substitute Smuckers caramel topping instead of the caramel candies and water?
If so, maybe I also need to adjust the amount of brown sugar and vanilla?

  22. Sue

Do you think I could use caramel topping in stead of the caramel candies??

  23. Sue

Would caramel topping work in place of the candy??

I make this regularly for school events and parties. Spread it on a platter, and top with crumbled skor bar for a great treat. If you need to be nut free trade the skor bits for sponge toffee or salted caramel sprinkles. Granny smiths or other tart apples are delicious with this dip, and you can use a few tablespoons of caramel topping or sauce instead of the melted caramels.

    1. Kathy Hitchcock

You can make this dip and leave out the carmels and water. It is just as good with the cream cheese, brown sugar and vanilla. My family loves it that way if you don't happen to like carmel.

I was raised on this dip! My family and I would make the dip, apples, cheese slices and popcorn every Sunday night and watch our favorite shows together. Great memory.

Something that makes this recipe MUCH easier is using straight soft caramel dip instead of individually wrapped caramel. They sell it in the fruit and veggie section of the grocery store on an end isle and comes in a little 8 oz cup.

  26. Erin

I've been making this dip for years, and it is PHENOMENAL, but better somehow with 20 unwrapped caramels! It IS fall. In a bowl. :)

  27. Jessica

So kind of stupid question but when you say melt in water, do you mean do a double boiler and melt over the water? Or actually melt it in the water? Seems kind of weird to actually melt it in water

    1. Therese

That was my thought too...I tried it first the way it was written bc even though I cook & bake a lot...I thought well lets just see. It was watery and kinda gross so now I'm making it with the water bath double boiler. I hope this turns out much better....in process now.

  28. Cheri Johnson

I love everything made with cream cheese

I used homemade caramel with creamcheese and it was great! Your recipe is very good too!

  30. Steffen

Rather than use the wrapped caramels, make your own. Take a can of sweetened condensed milk, place in a crock pot, then put in enough water to completey cover the can. Set it up for 8 hours on high. The wrapped caramels have multiple ingredients, some artificial... this home made... ONE ingredient that you can pronounce. :-)

  31. Teresa cardoza

Can u make this up like 5 hours before the guest arrives thanks looks so good

  32. Celena

I make dip like this, but it's just room temp cream cheese and a bit of brown sugar and vanilla. Still tastes caramel-y and delicious and I always have the info residents on hand! Kids love it and I love that i can totally control the sugar content!

  33. Linda

Going to try it this weekend. Fall is the perfect time for apples and caramel

  34. Hope

Love this idea! Haven't tried yet but thought you might like a tip I learned recently....if, after slicing, you drop your apple slices into any clear soda, i.e. Sprite, 7-Up or Ginger Ale, for a few seconds; remove to paper towel, then arrange on plate (or send off to school in a ZipLoc bag?) they will not turn brown for several hours!

  35. Katie

How many cups worth of dip does this make/people does this amount serve? I'm trying to find out if I need to double the recipe for the group I'm having over this Friday. Thanks!

I have made similar to this. I'm all about EZ! I use a jar of caramel-that you would find by ice cream toppings-, cream cheese and heath bar bits. No extra sugar or water needed. Although I might try adding vanilla next time I make it!

  37. Melody

Love this. Just took a batch to a weekend getaway with friends. They all loved it. The light texture was great. Pulled it out of the fridge over and over again.
