Slow Cooker Hawaiian Ribs

My sister is due on Sunday with her first child and I think I might be just as excited for this arrival as she is! :) This is the first baby, besides my kiddos, on my side of the family making me an OFFICIAL aunt! On my hubby’s side there are 8 siblings, 7 of which are married and all seven have/are having babies. Seriously, we have at least 3 babies a year on that side of the family, and it is AWESOME because every kid is guaranteed someone their age to play with at family get togethers. I love all my nieces and nephews all the same, but that being said, I think it is a little different for sisters having kids. I can’t wait to watch my little sister step into the amazing roll of mother. She is going to be absolutely fantastic. I also can’t wait to squeeze and kiss on that new baby’s cheeks :)

After having a couple babies, I know first hand how tiring it can be and what a LIFESAVER slow cooker meals are. Whether you are freezing them or just need to quickly throw a meal together, they are the best!

My family recently tried this recipe that I slightly adapted from A Year of Slow Cooking and loved it. I haven’t had much success with ribs in the past. I know, don’t ask me how you can ruin a meat that is only supposed to get more tender with cooking time, but I have had terrible luck… until this recipe. They were delicious and we will definitely be making them again!

ALSO: side note, I have recently started using slow cooker liners and I don’t know what took me so long! Saves on clean up DRASTICALLY. I highly recommend them :)

These ribs look and sound divine! I love the crock pot idea of cooking them and it seems like around here short ribs are on sale a lot too:). I want to try this recipe out.

Yum! I love slow cookers too! This is a wonderful idea, I always cook my ribs in the oven but this sounds even easier! Thanks for the great idea!

Best wishes to your sister on the up coming arrival of her little one, I agree, it is great to be an AUNTY! I love my two little nieces nearly as much as my own!

These sound great. I'll need to try them. And I'm with you on the slow cooker liners - my daughter got me started using them recently and I wondered how in the world I got by all these years without them!

Congrats to your sister, and to you too, of course! I became an OFFICIAL aunt just over a year ago...it's gone by super fast. Best wishes to all!

Nikki, how spicy is the Chinese 5 Spice powder? If I only used 1/8 tsp would it still taste the same as with the 1/2 tsp. We just don't do spicy but they look so good and I would like to try the recipes. Thanks, Daisy

Chinese 5 spice isn't spicy. Just flavorful.

These look great. Love the slow cooker part. Nothing like pulling in the garage at the end of the day and smelling something delicious ready to eat. We're having a party at Tumbleweed Contessa and I'd love it if you brought these over. http://www.tumbleweedcontessa.com/blog/

    Hope to see you there,
    Linda

Thanks so much for posting this! When I found this recipe, it immediately brought back memories of our honeymoon in Hawaii so I checked it out immediately. I made it last night, using pork country style ribs instead of beef. After cooking the ribs, I knew I wanted to try to approximate that crispy crunch we loved so much about the BBQ there, so I ran them under the broiler for a few minutes before serving. It helped. The sauce flavor was spot on, but in the end, I'm afraid it left us missing the thick, sticky consistency we think is an essential part of the authentic dish. I tried adding some cornstarch to the sauce to thicken it, but it really didn't help. Any suggestions to try and get it thick and sticky next time? Or are thin sauces just par for the course with slow cookers (I'm fairly new to them)? Thanks!!!

BTW, congrats to your family, and your blog is beautiful!!

What is Chinese 5 spice powder? Can I substitute something else for it?
