Homemade Bread Bowls

The colder weather has arrived, which for our family, means a lot of warm soups!  To me, there is nothing more filling and comforting on a cold day than a nice bowl of soup.  What’s the best way to eat soup?…In a bread bowl of course! I LOVE bread bowls!  This is a family recipe that we use and I hope you enjoy it as much as my family does.

I made some of this Creamy White Chicken Chili again to go with it!  It is one of my favorites!

Homemade Bread Bowls

Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
raise time 1 hour 30 minutes
Servings 6
Calories 610kcal

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 Tablespoon yeast
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 1 Tablespoon salt
  • 6 cups flour may need to add up to 7 cups

Instructions

  • Combine warm water, yeast and sugar and let sit for 10 minutes or until yeast is bubbly.
  • Add oil, salt, and 1 1/2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. Mix on low speed (if in a bread mixer).
  • Begin adding the rest of the flour 1 cup at a time until 5 cups total. Mix and continue to add the flour 1/2 cup at a time until the dough begins to clean the sides of the bowl and pulls away toward the middle. Do not add more than 7 cups of flour. Knead for 6 minutes.
  • Divide dough into 6 pieces. Make round balls. Place on large cookie sheet and let rise until doubled in size.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for 20-30 minutes.
  • Rub tops of bread bowls with butter.
  • Let Cool.
  • Cut top out and dig out bread, leaving a hollowed out bread bowl.
  • Fill with your favorite cream soup or chowder.
  • We usually put the bread from the center on the plate beside the bowl and dip it into the soup. You can also eat the bowl when you are all done!

Those are awesome looking! I have a recipe for bread bowls - you put the dough on upside-down bowls and bake them - this seems so much easier!

    1. Erika

Rubbing the tops with egg whites will make the outside more hard and crunchy

  2. TheBookGirl

My husband and I eat many meals of hearty soup and homemade bread but for some reason, it never occurred to me to combine the two this way, lol.

  3. Patti

Great recipe! This would be good with anything - stews, chilis. Nothing like warm, fresh bread!

What size of mixer are you using to add up to 14 cups of flour? I just want to make sure i don't overload my KA mixer b/c it sounds like i need to split this recipe to do it in my mixer

    1. Veronica M.

I made this in my KA 500 pro which I think is the 5 quart one. It did start trying to wrap and climb up over the bread hook towards the end. I kept scraping it down for a little while. Then gave up and dumped it out on my flour dusted table to finish the last little bits that still needed a little more blending together :)

  21. Stephanie

Hey I just wanted to let you know that I posted your recipe to my blog! I did link it back to you! Hope thats ok!

  22. Cheri

what kind of yeast is being used? thanks

    1. Veronica M.

I used Dry active yeast that i got at CostCo. I think it might have been Red Star brand. but there are tons of brands out there. I wouldn't waist money on the little packets. Best to buy a jar or even a bag of yeast. It keeps for a long time in moister proof container or ziplock in the frig :)

I halved this recipe for my smaller family and it was perfect! I was wary about so much sugar so I cut that about in half but other than that we made it exactly as written and got some rave reviews. I will definitely be pinning this and keeping it for future use. Thanks so much for sharing your recipe!

  24. Jennifer H.

  25. Yazmine Lazarin

I think i might have done something wrong? The dough was still very sticky wet even after adding total 14 cups. It was a messy sticky job but got it to 12. the dough was very silky and trying to slide thru my fingers as i was moving them to the cookie sheets. Im waiting for them to double in size . They are exspanding outward but not upwards ?

OK I Figured out what I might have done wrong after i started over. I had my water realy hot not warm and also i just did a mix of the yeast mix in my KA with the dough hook. And didn't check for bubbling before proceeding after the 10 minute timer . Which second batch i mixed the yeast with a spoon. It looked good at about 12 minutes.
Also after they were placed in the oven, they totally raised upwards.
In Soup Bread Bowl Heaven !

  27. Sandra

These look fabulous! Pinned and printed!

  28. Wendy

I've never made bread bowls before - what type of mixer do I use? Like a stand up one? Does it need a dough paddle? Or should I use my bread machine on the dough setting? Thanks so much!

  29. Kristen

mmmm - these look so yummy. I couldn't pay the outrageous prices at the grocery store. Glad I found this recipe and can't wait to try it out and fill with clam chowder.

  30. Allison

This looks great! About how long does it take to make (including waiting for the dough to rise)?

  31. Jane Alvarado

Is there any special type of yeast to use? Instant etc??

  32. Kim

My bread bowls always go flat. Any tips to keep them round?

  33. Theda Brown

  34. Linda Scarchuk

  35. DelBorai

Thank you for your recipes. I wanted to ask What kind of yeats should I use? activedry yeast or fresh yeast?

You said "Mix on high speed" and that you used your Kitchenaid mixer. I rebuild Kitchenaid mixers. There's not a one of them whose operating manual doesn't say "SPEED 2 ONLY" for the bread hook. When you unpacked it the dough hook had a round sticker over the hole where you attach it to the mixer stating "SPEED 2 ONLY" and you'd have had to peel it off to use it. So if everyone uses their Kitchenaid mixer on this and uses the dough hook, please be advised. Or send me more broken mixers. :-) Other than that I can't wait to try these!

    1. Sandra Roberts

If you understand the use of your equipment you realize 2 is high speed for your bread dough If a cook were to set it on the Mixers highest speed it would do nothing for your dough it will just stay on the hook and spin uselessly not kneading it.

  37. Sheena

Do I have to have an electric mixer to make this? Or can I do it by hand?? These look sooo good!

    1. Chef in Training

you can totally do this by hand if you wanted to :)

These turned out SOOOO well! They were very easy to make and very good!! You might want to mention how long the rising time could be so folks can plan how long they need to sit out. I let mine rise about 45 mins. They were beautiful! Thanks for the recipe!

  39. Jennifer

Made these tonight at the request of my teenage son and they turned out PERFECT! I made the recipe exactly as listed. Thank you for sharing!

  40. Cathy

Can you make this recipe without a bread mixer? How...

    1. Sandra Roberts

After you mix about half your flour in with a heavy spoon you may find it easier to mix the rest in by hand. When it begins to pull away from the bowl turn out on a lightly oiled surface (OLIVE OIL) Form into a rough ball hold down a small edge of the dough with one hand using the ball of your other hand push away the ball of dough about 10-12' then roll it back towards you with the same hand, turn dough 1/4 turn and repeat keep doing this making that 1/4 turn each time (you can add oil as needed to your surface to avoid sticking) until the dough is smooth and elastic (8-10 min) Using olive oil will not change the taste or texture of your bread and adding flour will Never knead bread using flour

  41. Mary

If you made about 5" individual bread bowls, any idea how many this recipe would make??

  42. Judy

Hi I haven't tried this recipe yet but I was wonder how many bowls do you get form this recipe

    1. Kitchen Kid

From the Instructions part of the recipe:
"Divide dough into 6 pieces. Make round balls."

That's an awful lot of bread for a meal... and, seriously, most won't eat it but they'll throw it away, wasting food. Food fads tend to be a bit... well, ridiculous.

    1. Sandra Roberts

Actually everyone in my family eats the bread bowls and the Bread I scoop out I make into Bread Crumbs or Croutons for other recipes so there is no waste. Also these cost about .39 cents a piece to make they don't have all the Preservatives and additives that Commercial Bakeries use to prolong self life so they are Healthier for your family. You can also form these into regular Loaf Pans and Bake making sandwich bread. Bread Baking is a Art (it is what formed the industrial revolution) unfortunately it has been a dying art that is finally making a resurgence as we become more aware of our health and the roll food plays. Eating Healthy isn't a fad it is a necessity as we see a huge rise is birth defects childhood illness and food allergies controlling what we eat and how we prepare it give us a better chance the future of our children and longevity for our selves.

I made 2 batches of this recipe one with All purpose the other with Bread flour. While the AP Bowls are really delicious the crust was a bit to light owning to a lower gluten content. The Bread Flour holds up better to less thick soups or to standing filled with herbed cheese and other dips on a buffet. The only difference in the recipe was Kneading (I use olive oil on my surface rather then adding more flour) and a double rise for the Bread Flour (Rise punch down and form and let rise) I will use your recipe for chowders, salads and things we will be eating immediately I do love how fast it comes together on a busy day.

I have these rising in the kitchen right now as I type. This is the third time making these and they are by far my family's favorite bread bowl recipe! They turn out perfect and delicious every time! After pulling them out of the oven I dab some butter over the tops then I add a tiny sprinkle of salt. These are to die for and super easy and quick to make! They save well for future meals too.
